The Northeastern women's soccer team bounced back in a big way on Sunday at Parsons Field, dominating Lafayette en route to a 3-0 victory.
The Huskies controlled possession for nearly the entire match, keeping Lafayette at bay with pressuring offense and suffocating defense. Northeastern outshot the Leopards 24-6, including a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Despite the Huskies masterful performance, the match was deadlocked at 0-0 going into halftime. Even though they fired 11 shots in the first half, the Huskies were unable to beat Lafayette keeper Lauren Smedley.
The tie came to a swift end when the second half started, Senior co-captain
Lesley Condie lobbed a deep ball to sophomore forward
Greta Samuelsdottir, who outran two Lafayette defenders and beat Smedley for her third goal of the year in the 47th minute.
It took Samuelsdottir a little more than a minute to strike again, taking a feed from junior
Kelly Matthews and firing a beautiful chip shot past Smedley. Samuelsdottir second goal of the match and fourth of the year came in the 49th minute, just one minute and 49 seconds after her first goal.
Junior
Veronica Napoli would add to the damage, putting her own rebound past Smedley in the 58th minute. The goal was her third of the year, and the twentieth of her career.
Seven different Huskies fired shots in the match, and six were able to notch a shot on goal. Samuelsdottir led the way with seven shots, three on goal. Napoli added five (four on goal) and senior co-captain
Kristen Blake blasted four (two on goal).
Junior
Stefanie Raiola, who came on as a sub in the 62nd minute, continued to test Smedley, firing three shots, all on goal.
Sophomore
Michelle Sopko started in goal for the Huskies and stopped four shots to record her third shutout in five games. Smedley took the loss for the Leopards, but recorded 12 saves.
Lafayette's best scoring chance came in the game's 75th minute, but Angela CampoBasso's open look was stopped thanks to a diving save by Sopko.
Twenty different Northeastern players saw action in the contest, and only Sopko was required to play all 90 minutes. Twenty-two Leopards saw action, for a whopping 42 total contestants.
Lafayette falls to 3-3 with the loss, while Northeastern moves to 4-2. The Huskies return to action on Friday at home against New Hampshire at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on GoNU.TV.
