Northeastern's three-game winning streak came to a halt on Wednesday, as the Providence College Friars defeated the Huskies, 2-0, at Sweeney Field.
It is the first time Northeastern (3-4) has been shut out all season, and it was the first win of the season for Providence (1-6).
The Friars got on the board at the 14:01 mark when senior Jaime Lipski tipped a Christie Lonsky shot over sophomore goaltender
Lizzie Priest for her first goal of the season.
The Huskies suffered a setback about 10 minutes into the second half when junior midfielder
Kaela Barker received a yellow card and was forced to sit out for five minutes. The Friars capitalized a minute later when Julie Ruggieri potted her first goal of the season to give Providence a 2-0 lead.
With Barker still on the sideline, Northeastern nearly tied it up when sophomore forward
Crystal Poland had a breakaway attempt saved by Friar goaltender Shannon DiStefano. Poland led the Huskies with six shots, two of them on goal.
The Husky defense played well in the second half, limiting Providence to just two shots in the frame.
Northeastern had a penalty corner in the final minute, but it was turned aside to preserve the shutout. The Huskies were able to record nine shots in the second half, but couldn't beat DiStefano (four saves).
The Huskies have a week off to recover before they travel across the Charles River to face Harvard on Sept. 22. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
