Paced by a pair of second half goals, the Northeastern Huskies downed the New Hampshire Wildcats, 3-1, at Parsons Field on Friday night.
Junior back
Georgina Kemp tallied her first career goal for the Huskies in the first half, before sophomore forward
Greta Samuelsdottir and junior forward
Veronica Napoli scored in the second half. The win is Northeastern's second-straight triumph to close out the non-conference slate.
Northeastern started the game with a strong attack, and it paid off in the 13th minute. Junior midfielder
Kirby Anderson took a corner from the left side and found Kemp for a diving header to put the Huskies ahead, 1-0.
The Huskies took the lead into the second half, but New Hampshire rallied to tie the game in the 50th minute. Jordyn Krall streaked up the left side and blasted a low shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Michelle Sopko, evening the score at 1-1.
The Huskies continued to keep possession and forced the Wildcats to remain in their third of the field. Once again the aggression led to a corner kick, and once again the Huskies capitalized. In the 62nd minute, senior midfielder
Kristen Blake placed the corner at the far post, where Samuelsdottir was waiting to head home her fifth goal of the season.
A little under three minutes later, Blake set up the third Northeastern goal. She fed a ball through the middle, and Napoli exploded past the back line and beat the defenseless keeper for the 3-1 lead.
Northeastern outshot the Wildcats, 24-11, and earned nine corner kicks to just one for New Hampshire. Sopko made three saves in the win.
The Huskies are back in action next Friday when they start conference play with a three-game road trip. First on the docket is a date with Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 24. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
