Fightin' Blue Hens edge Huskies, 54-52

A last-minute dunk from sophomore forward Jamelle Hagins lifted Delaware to a 54-52 win over Northeastern in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Wednesday night in Newark, Del. Sophomore guard Joel Smith led the Huskies with 18 points.

After Delaware built a five-point lead in the first half, the Huskies came back with a 12-0 run spanning halftime and built a 12-point lead in the second, but the Fightin' Blue Hens came back with a late rally to claim the win.

Senior guard Chaisson Allen tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as well as five assists for the Huskies (4-14, 0-7 CAA), while rookie Ryan Pierson added 10 points.

Senior guard Jawan Carter paced the Fightin' Blue Hens (9-8, 4-3) with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Hagins blocked eight shots.

After senior guard D.J. Boney hit a short jumper to put Delaware on the board, Smith knocked down a three-pointer to put the Huskies on top. After Pierson hit a pair of free throws for Northeastern, freshman guard Devon Saddler answered with a three to tie the game at 5-5.

Hagins hit the first of two free throws to put Delaware back on top, but missed the second, allowing Allen to grab the rebound and dish to Smith for a breakaway dunk that put Northeastern up, 6-5, and kicked off a 10-0 run that had the Huskies leading, 15-6, with 10:35 to go in the first half after a three from Allen.

The Fightin' Blue Hens came charging back with 12 unanswered points of their own, taking the lead when sophomore forward Josh Brinkley put in a layup and stretching the margin to 18-15 when sophomore forward Kelvin McNeil picked up a bucket with 6:18 to go in the first half.

After a pair of free throws from Carter gave Delaware a five-point lead, the Huskies closed the first half on an 11-0 run, tying the score on a three-pointer from Smith and taking a 28-22 lead into halftime after an Allen trey.

Northeastern built the lead to 12 early in the second half when freshman guard Alex Harris drilled a three with 17:30 to go.

Delaware slowly chipped away at the Northeastern lead and closed the game on a 9-0 run. Carter hit a pair of free throws with 1:07 left to tie the game and a Hagins dunk put the Fightin' Blue Hens up, 54-52, with 21 seconds to go. The Huskies couldn't get a basket in the final seconds at Delaware held on for the win.

The Huskies outrebounded the Fightin' Blue Hens by a 38-31 margin, but Delaware held a slight edge in shooting, going 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the field compared with Northeastern's 36.5 percent (19-of-52).

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m., visiting Drexel for a CAA matchup in Philadelphia.
