Box Score
Senior forward Frank Hassell tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals to lead Old Dominion to a 49-34 win over Northeastern in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va. Sophomore guard
Jonathan Lee paced the Huskies with 11 points and four assists.
The two teams combined for just 83 points in a methodical, slow-paced game with stifling defense, resulting in the lowest-scoring game in CAA history and the lowest-scoring game Northeastern has been involved in since a 36-34 win over Colgate in 1982.
Sophomore forward
Kauri Black grabbed six rebounds, including four offensive boards, and made two steals for the Huskies (4-10, 0-3 CAA), while rookie guard
Alex Harris notched a career-high six rebounds as well.
Junior guard Trian Iliadis joined Hassell in double figures with 11 points for the Monarchs (11-3, 2-1), winners of back-to-back games. Junior guard Kent Bazemore tallied 11 assists in a game in which Old Dominion scored only 19 field goals.
Hassell put the Monarchs on the board first with back-to-back buckets, but sophomore guard
Joel Smith hit a three, then added a free throw and a long jumper as Northeastern scored 10 unanswered points to give the Huskies an early 10-4 lead.
Old Dominion answered with an 22-2 run, tying the game at 12-12 when Hassell put in a layup and taking the lead as senior guard Darius James drained a three. The Monarchs built that to a 26-12 lead with 2:03 to go in the first half after Iliadis put in a layup on the fast break.
The Huskies scored four straight points to close out the half and cut Old Dominion's lead to 26-16 at the half.
Northeastern came back within four when freshman
Ryan Pierson knocked down a long jumper to make the score 30-26 with 10:13 to go, but the Monarchs responded with an 19-4 run to go up 49-29 with 3:49 remaining, keeping the Huskies at bay for the remainder of the game.
The Huskies shot 33.3 percent from the field (14-of-42), while the Monarchs were 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field, but just 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the free throw line. Northeastern was 4-of-6 from the free throw line, outshooting its opponent from the line for the seventh straight game. Old Dominion turned 15 Northeastern turnovers into 22 points, while the Huskies forced 12 turnovers, but only scored three points off turnovers.
The Huskies return to Matthews Arena to host Hofstra in a CAA matchup on Saturday at noon. The game will be televised live on CSN New England.
