DURHAM, N.H. - Eight Huskies recorded a point and three Husky skaters recorded multi-point games as Northeastern defeated New Hampshire, 4-2, for its second-straight victory.
It is the first time in school history that Northeastern (12-5-4, 4-3-3 Hockey East) has won twice at New Hampshire (9-11-0, 2-8-0 Hockey East) in the same season. The Huskies blanked the Wildcats, 4-0, on Dec. 1.
With
Florence Schelling on her way back from Switzerland after representing the Swiss in the MLP Nations Cup, senior
Leah Sulyma got the start between the pipes for the Huskies. She did not disappoint as she made 26 saves to improve to 2-0-0.
Northeastern opened the scoring just 3:21 into the game when sophomore defenseman
Casie Fields took a feed from
Rachel Llanes and fired a slap shot past Wildcat goaltender Lindsey Minton (29 saves) for the 1-0 lead. The strike was Fields' first goal of the season.
Sophomore forward
Siena Falino made it 2-0 just over three minutes later to extend her point streak to three games. She now has one goal and three assists in her last three contests.
Stephanie Gavronsky and
Lori Antflick each added an assist as they both had chances in a scrum in front of the net before Falino finally scored.
Senior forward
Kristi Kehoe stretched the lead to 3-0 when she notched her fourth goal of the season. She won a faceoff in the Wildcat zone back to Antflick, who then passed the puck to Fields at the left point. Her slap shot was stopped by Minton, but Kehoe was on the doorstep to deposit the rebound. Fields and Antflick each tallied their fourth assists of the season to give them each multi-point games.
The Wildcats gathered momentum in the beginning of the second stanza and finally got themselves on the scoreboard when Kristine Horn lit the lamp at the 4:07 mark of the period.
Northeastern regained the three-goal advantage three minutes later when
Casey Pickett converted on the power play with Llanes and
Alyssa Wohlfeiler each picking up assists. Fifty seconds later, New Hampshire capitalized on a power play of its own when Arielle O'Neill beat Sulyma to make it 4-2.
New Hampshire had an opportunity to cut the Huskies' lead to one when Kehoe was sent to the penalty box at the 17:14 mark of the third frame. Northeastern held strong, however, and killed off the penalty to preserve the two-goal victory.
The Huskies continued their stretch of disciplined play as they took just two penalties in the game. Northeastern has spent just six minutes in the sin bin during the last two games.
The win ensured that the Huskies completed their five-game road trip with a winning record (3-2-0). The two losses were against teams in the top-5 in both polls (Boston University and Wisconsin).
