Northeastern field hockey collected its second-straight win on Sunday, defeating VCU, 2-1, at Sweeney Field in Boston. With the win, the Huskies improved to 7-5 (2-2 CAA) on the season, and a perfect 3-0 at home.
Kaela Barker put Northeastern on top early in the first half, sliding a shot past VCU keeper Erin Jablonski just three-and-a-half minutes into the game. The goal was Barker's second of the season.
VCU answered 12 minutes later on Meg Neylon's first goal of the season. Neylon slapped a shot in traffic that popped into the air and over Northeastern keeper
Lizzie Priest. The ball landed behind Priest and found its way into the cage before it could be swatted away.
With the score knotted, 1-1, Northeastern's
Annie Clayman took a nice feed from
Christine Tase and fired a shot past Jablonski to give the Huskies the 2-1 advantage. Clayman's goal, her second of the season, proved to be the game winner.
Before the half, the Huskies had an opportunity to add an insurance goal, but VCU stopped two Northeastern penalty corners on the half's final plays.
The game turned defensive in the second half, as neither team was able to tally a goal.
The Huskies again had an opportunity to extend their advantage when VCU's Arialle Hess was issued a yellow card at 61:00. Northeastern enjoyed a one-player advantage for five minutes, but VCU held the Huskies at bay without a shot during the span.
The Rams mounted one furious, final charge in the game's last minute, but Northeastern's Priest turned aside Kelsey Scherrer's shot to preserve the victory.
For the game, Northeastern outshot VCU, 16-8, but both teams managed five shots on goal. The Huskies held a slight edge in penalty corners, 5-3. Northeastern's Priest totaled four saves while VCU keeper Jablonski registered three saves.
Sunday's game was Stick it to Cancer day at Sweeney Field. The Huskies, adorned in pink socks and ribbons, did their part to fundraise for cancer research. Stick it to Cancer is a national campaign that raises funds for the National Foundation for Cancer. More information is available on the National Foundation for Cancer website.
The day also was Northeastern field hockey alumnae day, with a number of former Huskies returning to Huntington Avenue to reunite with old friends and coaches and to celebrate the continued success of Northeastern field hockey.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 7, when they welcome Delaware to Sweeney Field for a 2 p.m. contest.
