Northeastern women's soccer defeated George Mason and advanced to the CAA Tournament semifinals in a 1-1 2OT (4-2) thriller on Thursday night that went to penalty kicks.

Both teams played a relatively slow match to start.

The best scoring chance in the first eight minutes came when Mason midfielder Mary Kate Lowry had a shot in the  from about 10 yards out hit the crossbar after a failed clearance off a corner kick.

Northeastern had a brief scare with a little under nine minutes to go when Patriot defender Kelly Thomas pinched up and was almost sent on a breakaway before being called on a late offsides.

Northeastern's best chance came with just under seven minutes remaining. An awkwardly bouncing ball fell to forward Veronica Napoli in the box. Napoli's ensuing shot was stopped on an acrobatic save by Mason goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson.

At half, both teams had only two shots each while Mason held a 4-1 advantage in corners.

Northeastern goalkeeper Paige Burnett made a big stop at the 32:27 mark of the second half when she ran out and snatched a rolling ball in the box that would've sent Mason forward Tiana Kallenberger in alone on goal.

The Huskies put on solid pressure midway through the second half.

Forward Hanna Terry had an opportunity in the 21st minute when she had open space from about 20 yards out and missed wide left. Midfielder Kirby Anderson then had a shot from 25 yards that missed just high a couple minutes later.

Burnett was once again aggressive with under 12 minutes remaining, running out of the box to stop a Mason scoring opportunity on a breakaway.

The Patriots broke the scoreless tie, taking a 1-0 lead in the 84th minute when Kallenberger sliced a shot from the far left side of the box to the top right corner. The tally was assisted by Jazmin Cardoso and Kelly Thomas.

With just under one minute remaining, Anderson took a free kick which settled into the box. NU defender Awnalisa Walker buried a shot from up close to the right side of the net, tying the score at one apiece and sending the match into overtime.

At the end of regulation, Northeastern had seven shots to Mason's 10.

Both teams traded high percentage scoring opportunities in the first overtime. NU's best chance came with one minute and 39 seconds left when Greta Samuelsdottir sliced a shot from the rightr edge of the box that the Mason goalkeeper barely got a hand on.

Neither team was able to score in either OT period and the match went to OT.

In penalty kicks, Burnett  looked like anything but a rookie. As Northeastern buried all four kicks, Burnett made stops in the first and fourth round to send Northeastern to the CAA semifinals.

Northeastern will play VCU on Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the CAA Tournament semifinals.
