Results
The Northeastern swimming and diving team defeated Massachusetts, 166-134, on Saturday in Amherst. With the win, the Huskies improve to 5-3 (2-2 CAA) on the season.
In a balanced effort, Northeastern swimmers captured at least three scoring places in 10 of 14 individual events, and at least two scoring places in every individual event. The Huskies also were victorious in one of two relays.
Highlighting the victory was the school-record performance by
Anna Schegoleva in the 100 yard backstroke. Schegoleva won the event by more than three seconds, finishing in 56.95, and bested the previous record of 57.04, set by
Dana Schleif on Feb. 25, 2011 at the CAA Championship.
Northeastern opened the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay.
Dana Schleif,
Keary McClernan,
Erica DeMunbrun and
Nicole Colucci finished first with a time of 1:52.18. The Huskies maintained the momentum through the second event, the 500 yard freestyle, finishing first, second and fourth.
Adriana Sepulveda won the event by more than three seconds, with a time of 5:08.09.
Megan Foran was second at 5:11.29, while
Jill Shields finished at 5:14.62.
In the 100 yard freestyle,
Kelley Becherer touched the wall in 53.56, good for second place, while
Julia Sepulveda (54.79) finished fourth and
Jessica Colucci (55.40) finished fifth.
The Huskies nearly swept the day's fourth event, the 50 yard backstroke, finishing in first, second, third and fifth places. Teammates
Nicole Colucci and
Dana Schleif finished in a tie for first, with identical times of 28.70.
Erica DeMunbrun clocked in at 28.85, good for third place, while Cassie Cesaro finished in fifth at 29.15.
In the 50 yard breaststroke,
Julia Alvarez (31.59) and
Keary McClernan (32.56) earned points for NU, finishing second and third, respectively.
The Huskies again posted a near-sweep in the meet's sixth event, the 100 yard butterfly.
Anna Schegoleva (57.62) led the Northeastern charge, finishing first, just ahead of teammate
Jill Kearns (58.51). The Huskies' Alli Gielowski placed fourth with a time of 1:00.50, followed by
Adriana Sepulveda (1:01.20).
Chelsea Lim (12.01) and
Dana Schleif (12.15) each earned points for Northeastern in the 25 yard freestyle, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Rachael Peterson and
Candace Young led the team's efforts in the one-meter diving. Peterson earned a score of 229.49, to finish in second, while Young totaled 210.60, to collect third place honors.
The Huskies collected three scoring places in the 50 yard freestyle, led by
Chelsea Lim's second place showing (25.00).
Kelley Becherer (25.32) finished in third, just ahead of teammate
Nicole Colucci (25.63).
Northeastern swimmers finished 1-2-3 in the 100 yard backstroke, led by the school-record effort of
Anna Schegoleva. Schegoleva won the event by more than three seconds, finishing in 56.95, to set a new NU record.
Dana Schleif, the previous school-record holder, finished second in 1:00.05, while teammate
Cassandra Cesaro (1:01.36) was third.
Julia Alvarez gave Northeastern its sixth first-place finish of the day, winning the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.97.
Keary McClernan (1:10.10) earned points with a third place finish.
The Huskies collected three more scoring finishes in the 200 yard freestyle, with
Julia Sepulveda (1:56.55) finishing second,
Megan Foran (1:56.61) third, and
Kelley Becherer (1:56.72) fourth.
Anna Schegoleva captured first place in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 26.66. Teammates Alli Gielowski (27.34) and
Alison Blom (28.13) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Huskies divers then placed 2-3-4 in the three-meter diving.
Rachael Peterson and
Candace Young again paced Northeastern, finishing in second (230.84) and third (220.65), respectively, while teammate
Anne Schaafsma collected points for NU, finishing fourth with 194.85.
Jill Kearns earned a first-place finish in the 100 yard IM, giving the Red and Black its eighth top finish, with a time of 1:01.73.
Erica DeMunbrun was third at 1:02.68, and
Adriana Sepulveda finished fourth at 1:02.84.
With the outcome in hand, Northeastern swam the meet's final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, as an exhibition.
The Huskies will take a break from competition to focus on final exams. Northeastern will embark on a training trip to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, in late-December and early-January, before returning to competition on Jan. 14, when it travels to CAA foe Delaware.
