Jawan Carter scored 22 points to lead Delaware to a 72-66 win over Northeastern in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
Chaisson Allen led the Huskies with 20 points and four steals and
Kauri Black notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Neither team ever had a double-digit lead in a game that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. The Huskies (9-18, 5-11 CAA) were up by four early on, but the Fightin' Blue Hens (12-14, 7-9) led by four at the half and took the lead for good when D.J. Boney hit a three with 2:05 to go in the second half before pulling away late.
All five Delaware starters scored in double figures and Kelvin McNeil notched a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Rookie Devon Saddler chipped in 16 points, Jamelle Hagins notched 12 points and Boney had 11 points.
Rookie guard
Alex Harris joined Allen and Black in double figures with 10 points for the Huskies on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Ryan Pierson created the first two baskets for the Huskies, scoring off an offensive rebound and a steal to put Northeastern up, 4-0. Carter responded with a pair of threes that kicked off an 8-0 Delaware run to put the Fightin' Blue Hens up, 10-6.
Allen tied the game up with a three-pointer and
Ben Felix put the Huskies back on top with a close-range jumper.
Jamelle Hagins hit a shot to put the Blue Hens back up by one, but Felix struck back with a jumper after pulling down an offensive rebound, giving the junior center a career-high four points.
Delaware reclaimed the lead when Saddler knocked down a three, but Harris grabbed a rebound and raced the length of the court to level the score at 20-20 with 7:28 to go in the first half.
Saddler then completed a traditional three-point play to put the Fightin' Blue Hens back on top and Boney had an and-one as well to get Delaware up, 28-22, with two minutes to go.
A dunk from Harris got the Huskies back within four and Delaware took a 30-26 lead to halftime.
The Huskies took their first lead of the second half when
Joel Smith set up Harris for a layup, but Saddler answered with a layup of his own.
Black leveled the score at 43-43 with his layup before McNeil hit a jumper to put Delaware back on top. Harris knocked down a jumper to tie the game back up at 45-45, but a pair of McNeil free throws and back-to-back jumpers from Hagins and Carter had the Fightin' Blue Hens up by six with 8:06 to go.
Black threw down a dunk and Allen followed with five free throws to put the Huskies back up by one with 6:08 to go, but Saddler responded with a pair of free throws and a Carter layup had Delaware back up by three.
Smith tied the game with a three-pointer and Allen followed with a short-range jumper that had Northeastern up, 57-55, with 3:47 to go, but Delaware again had an answer with a Saddler layup and Boney three swinging the lead back to the Fightin' Blue Hens and Delaware pulled away from there to clinch the win.
Delaware shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the field, while Northeastern was at 41 percent (25-of-61) from the floor, but the Huskies were cold from beyond the arc, shooting just 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from downtown. Northeastern outmuscled Delaware on the boards, holding a 36-28 advantage in rebounds.
The Huskies now step out of conference for the final time in the regular season with a visit to UNC Asheville as part of Sears Bracketbusters on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Asheville, N.C.
