Huskies hang on for 2-2 tie with Connecticut

Box Score

HARTFORD -
Dani Rylan gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead just 1:22 into the third period, but Connecticut drew level four minutes later to preserve a point, as both teams skated to a 2-2 draw at the XL Center in Hartford on Sunday.

After Connecticut (12-16-2, 8-7-2 Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead 3:03 into the first frame, Northeastern (14-9-5, 6-7-4 Hockey East) answered with a goal of its own in the second stanza to even the score, 1-1. Kristi Kehoe took a pass from Siena Falino and blasted a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat UConn goalie Alexandra Garcia (33 saves) to the far post. The strike was Kehoe's sixth goal of the season.

Northeastern's defense did an excellent job of shutting UConn down in the second period, as UConn only had two shots on goal in the frame to the Huskies' 12. It is the lowest shot total allowed in a period by the Huskies this season.

It didn't take long for the Huskies to grab the lead in the third period. At the 1:22 mark, Rylan received a pass in the high slot from Stephanie Gavronsky and roofed a shot past Garcia for the 2-1 lead. It was Rylan's second goal of the season. Both of her goals have given Northeastern a 2-1 advantage in the third period.

Taylor Gross brought UConn back to level terms 5:08 into the third period when she beat Leah Sulyma (20 saves) for her 11th goal of the season.

Northeastern had all four shots in the overtime session, but was unable to break through against Garcia. Sunday's contest was the third in the Huskies' last five games that has gone to OT. Northeastern is 1-1-1 in those games.

Rachel Llanes had a successful day at the faceoff dot, winning 23 of 29 faceoffs for the Huskies. Northeastern also remained disciplined, taking just one penalty. It matches a season-low of two penalty minutes, a mark set on Jan. 2 at St. Cloud State, a 2-1 Husky win that saw Rylan score her first Division 1 goal.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Huskies as Northeastern plays Harvard in the opening round of the Women's Beanpot on Tuesday, Feb. 8., at Boston College. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m.
