Jawan Carter notched 17 points and four assists to lead Delaware to a 60-58 win over Northeastern in the first round of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship on Friday evening in Richmond, Va. Sophomore Jonathan Lee led the Huskies with 16 points and four assists.

Northeastern led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Delaware came back within two by halftime. The second half featured five ties and seven lead changes with the Fightin' Blue Hens pulling ahead for good with 2:45 to go when Brian Johnson and Devon Saddler hit back-to-back threes.

The 10th-seeded Huskies finish the regular season at 11-20, while the seventh-seeded Fightin' Blue Hens improve to 14-16 and will advance to face second-seeded Old Dominion in the CAA quarterfinals.

All-CAA senior Chaisson Allen scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his final game with the Huskies. He finishes his standout career as the ninth-leading scorer in Northeastern history with 1,550 career points. Sophomore Joel Smith also hit double figures with 10 points.

Saddler chipped in 13 points for the Fightin' Blue Hens and Johnson scored 10 points. Jamelle Hagins grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

After a back-and-forth start to the game that led to a 12-12 tie, the Huskies reeled off a 13-2 run, going up by a 25-14 margin when Smith nailed a three with 7:34 to go. Delaware closed the first half with seven unanswered points, though, holding Northeastern without a basket for the final 4:20 of the opening frame to cut the Huskies' lead to 29-27 at the half.

Saddler opened the second half with a layup that knotted the score. The game went back-and-forth from there until a traditional three-point play by D.J. Boney put the Fightin' Blue Hens up by four and Hakim McCuller hit a free throw as Delaware went up, 44-39, with 11:20 to go.

The Huskies leveled the score with a spurt that saw Lee hit three free throws and Ryan Pierson put in a layup, getting the game to 51-51 with 5:07 to play. Smith drained a three to put the Huskies on top, but Johnson answered with a trey at the other end and Saddler followed to put Delaware up, 57-54, with 2:45 to go.

Vinny Lima made a steal and was fouled, hitting two free throws with 18 seconds to go to get the Huskies back within one. Carter made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left to restore a two-point edge for Delaware. The Huskies then missed a three-point attempt and Delaware pulled down the rebound, but when Carter was fouled, he missed both free throws, giving the Huskies one more chance with nine seconds to go.

Allen took the ball up the court, but couldn't break through the Delaware defense. The Fightin' Blue Hens created a scrum for the ball and the final horn sounded before either team could gain possession.

The Fightin' Blue Hens shot 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc, while holding the Huskies to 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the floor and 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point land. Delaware held a 30-28 advantage on the boards.
