Northeastern women's soccer player
Greta Samuelsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) and the Icelandic national team dropped a 4-2 decision to the U.S. national team today (March 9) in the championship match of the prestigious Algarve Cup.
The appearance was Iceland's first-ever in the Algarve Cup championship game, while the U.S. team was making its ninth consecutive appearance in the title match.
Samuelsdottir contributed to Iceland's impressive tournament run, logging nearly 30 minutes of playing time in the championship game, as well as quality minutes in two of the team's three group-play matches.
Iceland, playing in Group B, posted a perfect 3-0 mark in group play, with wins over Sweden (2-1), China (2-1) and Denmark (1-0). The U.S. team (Group A) advanced with wins over Japan (2-1), Norway (2-0) and Finland (4-0).
Samuelsdottir is coming off a strong 2010 performance at Northeastern. The sophomore forward started all 18 games for the Huskies and finished the season with eight goals and five assists to tie for the team lead with 21 points.
The Algarve Cup, held annually in the Algarve region of Portugal, is one of the world's most celebrated women's soccer events.
