ZURICH - Northeastern University assistant women's ice hockey coach Hilary Witt (Canton, Mass.) helped guide the U.S. Women's National Team to the gold medal at the 2011 IIHF World Women's Championship, as Team USA defeated Canada, 3-2, in an overtime thriller on Monday, April 25.
Witt has now helped Team USA win two medals at the IIHF World Women's Championship. She was an assistant coach in 2007 when Team USA took silver. The United States has now won three straight IIHF World Women's Championships dating back to 2008, and four titles overall.
Team USA went 5-0 during the tournament and won its games by a combined score of 39-6. The win against Canada was the only game decided by fewer than three goals, and it was also the only time the U.S. allowed more than one goal.
A native of Canton, Mass., Witt graduated Northeastern in 2001 and is the Huskies' all-time leading scorer. She is a member of the Northeastern Hall of Fame and the Women's Beanpot Hall of Fame, and played for the U.S. Women's National Team in 2001. She will enter her second season as an assistant coach at Northeastern this fall.
