Northeastern men's basketball players
Chris Avenant and
Dinko Marshavelski continue to gain valuable experience playing at the international level. Both players have trained this summer with their national team programs in preparation for the FIBA basketball championships. The events serve as qualifying tournaments for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
“It's a tremendous honor for both of these young men to be able to represent their country,” said Northeastern head coach
Bill Coen. “We're extremely proud of them for what they've accomplished and for how they've represented our program and our university. This is an experience they'll never forget.”
Avenant, who will be a sophomore this season, is training with the South Africa National Men's Basketball Team. The team will compete in the FIBA African Nations Championship, or Afrobasket, Aug. 17-28 in Madagascar. The tournament--Africa's biggest basketball championship--will produce one winner that will represent the continent at the 2012 Olympic Games. South Africa is in Group C and will open pool play on Aug. 17 against the Ivory Coast. The team will face Cameroon on Aug. 19 and Egypt on Aug. 21.
