Northeastern women's soccer defeated the James Madison Dukes Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field, 4-2, improving to 6-4-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in the CAA.
The Huskies erupted for a quick start in the first half, taking an early 3-0 lead.
Senior midfielder
Kirby Anderson converted on a deflected ball in the sixth minute on a feed from forward
Veronica Napoli to put the Huskies up by one. It was Anderson's second goal on the season.
Northeastern struck just a minute later when forward
Greta Samuelsdottir put a shot past the James Madison goalkeeper from inside the box on a short cross. Napoli recorded her second assist of the match. The goal was Samuelsdottir's fourth on the season.
Samuelsdottir scored her second goal of the match in the 25th minute, nudging the ball into the back of the net from a few yards out. Junior forward
Hanna Terry assisted on the tally.
The Dukes answered in the 30th minute when midfielder Kelly Germain put a shot off the hands and over Northeastern goalkeeper
Paige Burnett to make it 3-1.
Napoli opened scoring in the second half, darting down the field towards a lob from defender
Kelly Matthews, beating a James Madison defender and edging it past the Dukes goalkeeper at the top of the box.
The goal was Napoli's team-leading sixth on the season.
James Madison cut the deficit to two in the 59th minute on a goal by forward Steph Hamilton who snuck it into the back of the net past a diving Burnett.
The two teams traded scoring opportunities late in the second half, the Huskies best chance coming from Samuelsdottir who had a header saved off a corner from the left side by Anderson.
The Dukes had an opportunity to cut Northeastern's lead to one with under nine minutes remaining after a foul in the box by Huskies defender
Sandra Magnusdottir, resulted in a penalty kick for James Madison.
Forward Yolie Anderson-Golhor missed the penalty kick high.
Northeastern held on for the 4-2 victory. The Dukes outshot the Huskies, 19-11, on the match and held the advantage in penalty kicks, 6-1. Burnett made six stops on the day, in recording her sixth collegiate win.
The Huskies return to Parsons Field on Thursday, Sept. 29 when they take on Delaware. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
