Northeastern sweeps CAA foes Delaware and Drexel

Results

The Northeastern swimming and diving team defeated rival Delaware in thrilling fashion on Saturday, securing a 151-149 victory in the meet's final event. It's the second year in a row that the Huskies have beaten the Blue Hens in the concluding event of the meet. Northeastern also cruised past Drexel, 234-59, to sweep the tri-meet and improve to 7-3 (4-2 CAA) on the season.

Northeastern entered the day's final event--the 400-yard freestyle relay--with a slim seven-point lead over Delaware. The Blue Hens claimed first place in the event. The Northeastern team of Megan Foran, Nicole Colucci, Kelley Becherer and Adriana Sepulveda finished in second with a time of 3:35.00, putting the meet outcome squarely on the the event's third-place finish. The Huskies' Chelsea Lim, Jessica Colucci, Julia Sepulveda and Alli Gielowski delivered the all-important points, out-touching the Hens and finishing in 3:36.97.

To open the afternoon, the Huskies claimed a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Anna Schegoleva, Julia Alvarez, Erica DeMunbrun and Chelsea Lim touched the wall at 1:48.46.

Northeastern claimed three scoring spots in the 1000 yard freestyle. Jill Shields led the effort with a second-place finish (10:44.03), while teammate Colleen McCormack was third (10:47.22) and Jenny Doolin was fourth (10:48.55).

Adriana Sepulveda delivered the Red and Black's initial first-place finish of the day, winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.70. Foran claimed second, finishing at 1:56.28.

Schegoleva delivered for the Huskies again, grabbing a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (57.28), while Dana Schleif was fourth at 59.99.

Alvarez and Keary McClernan finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Alvarez touched the wall at 1:06.61, while McClernan finished at 1:09.12.

Jill Kearns claimed the Huskies' second first-place finish of the afternoon. Her time of 2:05.25 in the 200-yard butterfly was the event's best, while teammate J. Sepulveda also collected points, finishing third in 2:08.24.

Northeastern dominated the 1-meter diving competition, claiming first, second and fifth place finishes. Rachel Peterson led the way with a score of 247.65. Candace Young was second (241.35), while teammate Anne Schaafsma was fifth (193.90).

In the 100-yard freestyle, two Huskies claimed points, with Becherer finishing third in 54.30, just ahead of teammate Foran, who was fourth at 54.55.

Schegoleva finished in a scoring position for the third time on the day, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.62. Schleif also collected points, finishing fifth (2:09.81).

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Alvarez claimed second place (2:23.81), while McClernan swam to fourth in 2:27.16.

A. Sepulveda won the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.42), giving Northeastern its fifth top finish of the day. Foran was third at 5:11.26.

A trio of Huskies touched the wall in succession in the 100-yard butterfly. Kearns, Gielowski and DeMunbrun finished two-three-four, respectively, with times of 57.86, 58.08 and 58.72.

The Huskies continued to dominate the diving competition, sweeping the top three positions in the 3-meter event. Young took top honors (236.40), followed by Peterson (235.90) and Schaafsma (203.50).

Northeastern maintained that momentum into the second-to-last event of the afternoon--the 200-yard IM. Similar to the 3-meter event, the Huskies swept the top three spots in the IM, with Schegoleva leading the way (2:09.24). Teammates Kearns (2:09.36) and J. Sepulveda (2:10.88) finished second and third, respectively.

That event set up the day's dramatic finish, with the Northeastern relays claiming second and third to secure the Huskies' fourth win in their last five meets.

Northeastern will return to the pool on Jan. 21, when it travels to Burlington, Vt., for a 12 p.m., meet against the University of Vermont.
