Swimming and diving defeats UVM for fourth straight win

The Northeastern swimming and diving team collected its fourth straight win on Saturday, defeating Vermont, 184-116, in Burlington, Vt. The Huskies claimed 12 of 16 first place finishes. Highlighting the afternoon, the Huskies' Jill Kearns broke the UVM pool record in the 400 IM.

In a pre-meet ceremony, Vermont honored the Northeastern seniors as well as the Catamount senior class.

The Huskies opened Saturday's meet by winning the day's first event, the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Dana Schleif, Julia Alvarez, Anna Schegoleva and Chelsea Lim touched the wall in 1:50.53.

Three Northeastern swimmers placed in the 1650-yard free. Colleen McCormack earned a second place finish (17:52.71), while Jill Shields (18:10.80) and Jenny Doolin (18:27.76) finished third and fourth.

The Huskies again took three scoring places in the day's third event, as Anna Schegoleva (1:53.93) won the 200-yard free and Megan Foran (1:56.95) finished in second and Julia Sepulveda (1:59.57) third.

Three more Northeastern swimmers earned points in the 100-yard back, with Allison Walker swimming to a second-place finish (1:01.34), followed by Cassandra Cesaro (1:01.58) in third and Nicole Colucci (1:02.18) in fourth.

In the 100-yard breast, Julia Alvarez clocked in at 1:08.23, good for second place, followed by teammate Keary McClernan (1:10.29) in third.

Jill Kearns turned in the Huskies' third top finish of the meet, winning the 200-yard fly in a time of 2:05.28. Teammates Erica DeMunbrun (2:08.96) and Adriana Sepulveda (2:14.61) finished second and fourth, respectively.

In the 50-yard free, Kelley Becherer led a trio of Huskies, claiming first place in 25.41, while Chelsea Lim (25.53) finished second and Jessica Colucci (26.19) fifth.

The Huskies continued to pile up the points, claiming first and fifth in the 1-meter diving. Rachael Peterson (254.47) won the event and DeAnna Vecchiarello (206.10) was fifth.

Anna Schegoleva gave the Red and Black another first-place finish, winning the 100-yard free with a time of 52.71. Megan Foran (55.47) was third,

In the 200-yard back, Dana Schleif claimed first place with a time of 2:08.21. Cassandra Cesaro (2:10.29) was third and Allison Walker (2:13.41) fifth.

Keary McClernan touched the wall in 2:29.83 to win the 200-yard breast. Teammate Julia Alvarez finished third at 2:30.85.

Adriana Sepulveda (5:06.09) and Jill Shields (5:24.54) finished first and fifth in the 500-yard free for the Huskies.

In the 100-yard fly, Northeastern swimmers finished first-second-fourth, with scoring efforts from Erica DeMunbrun (58.40), Alli Gielowski (58.95) and Amanda Zipf (1:02.30).

Back in the diving well, Rachael Peterson (262.87) and Candace Young (242.85) earned points for the Huskies, finishing second and third in the 3-meter diving.

Jill Kearns turned in her record-setting performance in the day's 15th event. The senior finished the 400-yard IM in 4:32.00, breaking the old pool record of 4:32.23. Teammate Julia Sepulveda finished in second with a time of 4:33.94.

Northeastern capped off the day by claiming first and third in the 200-yard free relay. Chelsea Lim, Anna Schegoleva, Dana Schleif and Erica DeMunbrun won the event with a time of 1:40.40. The NU team of Nicole Colucci, Adriana Sepulveda, Megan Foran and Amanda Zipf claimed third with a time of 1:44.92.

The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they welcome Dartmouth and Rhode Island to Barletta Natatorium for a tri-meet that is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
