Coming off a huge road win at Delaware on Sunday, the Northeastern women's soccer team returns home this weekend for its final two home games of the 2012 season. First up is a Friday evening affair with the Towson Tigers. Kick-off at Parsons Field is set for 6 p.m.
NU vs. Towson, All-Time
Towson has had the upper hand throughout the all-time series with Northeastern, holding an 8-3-1 record in the series, which dates back to 1997. Northeastern's last victory against Towson came on Oct. 2, 2009. Leone is winless in her two appearances against the Tigers, including a 3-1 loss in Towson, Md. last season.
Veronica Napoli scored the lone goal for NU in the game, and Towson's Cheyenne Skidmore notched three assists.
Last time out
Northeastern picked up its second straight CAA road win on Sunday, Oct. 7, taking down the Delaware Blue Hens in Newark, 2-0. Freshman
Shayna Blackwood got NU on the board in the 26th minute with her first career goal, which held up as the game winner.
Sandra Magnusdottir added an insurance goal late in the first half, her second of the season. Both goals for NU were unassisted, the first two unassisted tallies of the season for the Huskies. Blackwood's goal was also the first this season by a Northeastern freshman.
Paige Burnett stopped four shots in the victory for NU, recording her fourth clean sheet in her last six games. The Huskies moved to 3-2 in league play on the year with the CAA victory, currently placing NU in fifth place in the conference. NU also jumped 24 RPI spots with the win.
Tracking the Tigers
Towson enters Friday's contest at 1-11-1 on the year, with a 1-4 mark in CAA league play. The Tigers dropped their most recent contest, a 1-0 decision at James Madison on Oct. 7. Skidmore leads the Towson offense, tallying a team high three goals on the season. Emily Banes, Alex Evitta and Sofia Read have added goals in conference play, and Kat Sipes and Katie Holtzapple lead the way with two assists apiece. Erin Quinn mans the pipes, where she has made a league-best 88 saves this season. Quinn has started all 13 games for Towson this season.
Fire away, freshman
Rookie defender
Shayna Blackwood scored her first collegiate goal on Sunday at Delaware. The Somerville, N.J. native came in recruited as a forward, but has made a seamless transition to the back line. Blackwood has started each of NU's last six games on the defense, and is seventh on the squad with 1,030 minutes. Blackwood leads all NU rookies this year in scoring with a 1-2-4 line.
Picture perfect Paige
Sophomore goalie
Paige Burnett has gotten off to a red-hot start in conference play, recording shutouts in three of NU's first five league games. Her four-save blanking at Delaware on Sunday was her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Placentia, Calif. native is third in the CAA with 60 saves, and her four shutouts rank fourth. Burnett has started all 35 games since she arrived on campus last season, and her 162 career saves place her seventh in NU history.
Gotta get ahead
Northeastern is unbeaten (4-0) when leading at halftime. The Huskies are also 4-1 when scoring first, when leading in shots, and when scoring two or more goals.
Terry's touch
Junior
Hanna Terry leads Northeastern in assists this year with three, which is good for seventh in the CAA. Terry has been knocking on the door for her first NU goal this year, currently sitting second on the team with 29 shots.
Greta the Great
Senior captain
Greta Samuelsdottir's 5-2-12 scoring line is tops on the squad. Her five goals are tied for eighth in the conference, and her 12 points are also eighth. The Kopavogur, Iceland native now has 23 career goals, giving her sole possession of fourth place all-time in NU history. With 57 career points, she sits one point out of third in program history.
Even stevens
Other than Samuelsdottir's five goals, NU's nine other goals have been scored by eight different players, with only senior
Sandra Magnusdottir also registering multiple goals. NU's 13 assists this year have come from nine different players.
Pick your spots
Savoy's goal on Sept. 16 vs. Albany came on her only shot on goal of the season, as did sophomore
Awnalisa Walker's at Cincinnati on Aug. 26. Sophomore Biance Calderone, classmate
Lahaina Zoller and redshirt sophomore
Hannah O'Donnell have all registered goals this season while taking less than five shots on goal.
The reliable rookie
Freshman
Oksana Nicholls is one of three players (Terry and Burnett) to start all thirteen contests for Coach Leone this season, and has almost never left the pitch. The Glendora, Calif. native leads the squad 1,188 minutes on the year, only missing a single minute the entire season.
The conference course
Northeastern currently sits at fifth in the CAA with a 3-2 record. The Huskies were projected to finish fourth in the CAA preseason coaches poll. Northeastern is 1-1 against teams ahead of it in the standings, with two such games to go. Northeastern's 2-0 mark on the road in CAA play makes them one of just two teams (along with first place William & Mary) to be unbeaten while away from home in league play.
