Sophomore sensations
Eric Jenkins and
Brian Doyle helped make history for Northeastern men's track & field by both toppling school records in the mile and 3,000-meter run, respectively, on Saturday night at the Boston University Valentine Invitational at the Track & Tennis Center.
Jenkins ran Northeastern's fastest indoor mile in school history, breaking the four-minute mile with a blistering speed of 3:59.18 to take fourth place, overall, in a field of 253 harriers. The Portsmouth, N.H. native was the second overall collegiate, finishing behind the winner, Boston University's Rich Peters (3:57.83).
Jenkins' pace of 3:59.18 bested Erik Nedeau's mark by half a second set back on Feb. 27, 1993 when he posted a time of 3:59.68. His run was the fastest clip in Huskies' history in almost 19 years.
“Breaking the four-minute barrier is a huge milestone for every elite miler and it's extremely impressive to do it as a sophomore”, NU distance coach Renny Waldron said.
Doyle followed in his teammates footsteps by setting the school record in the 3,000-meter challenge after submitting a time of 8:09.78 for fifth place overall. The Tiverton, R.I. native was the fourth-fastest collegiate distance runner as Dartmouth's John Bleday won the event in 8:03.78.
The second-year runner's time destroyed Northeastern's old standard set back on March 8, 1987 when Tim Gannon ran the school record in 8:14.01. Doyle's mark is Northeastern's fastest time for the indoor 3K in almost 25 years.
The Huskies had nine other competitors on Saturday at BU and a few more noteworthy marks occurred throughout the course of the day.
