Jamie Conroy made Northeastern history on her Senior Night and the Northeastern women's basketball team won its fourth game in five tries, thumping the Hofstra Pride at Solomon Court by a score of 80-62.
Conroy dished out ten assists in the contest, giving her 150 on the year, the most in a single season by an NU player in program history. Conroy also added nine points and eight rebounds, finishing just shy of a triple double.
Dani Iervolino, also honored before the game in Senior Night ceremonies, led NU with 17 points.
Jewel Tunstull also dropped 17 and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Huskies finish the 2011-12 regular season with a record of 8-21, including a 6-7 mark at Solomon Court. Northeastern finishes at 6-12 in league play, earning the tenth seed in the CAA tournament.
Northeastern scored the game's first five points on baskets from
Deanna Kerkhof and
Christine Huber. After the Pride tied the game at five, Huber and
Jewel Tunstull scored to put the Huskies up 9-5.
Hofstra used an 11-2 run to go up five, but a triple from senior
Dani Iervolino pulled NU within two, and four straight points from Huber followed by an
Amencie Mercier three gave Northeastern a 21-16 lead.
An Iervolino free throw pushed the NU lead to six, but back-to-back triples from the Pride tied the contest. The teams traded baskets from midway through the half to the end of the half. No team took more than a a two point lead before a three from freshman
A'lece Mark with 33 seconds to play in the half put Northeastern up 41-38. Conroy picked up her fifth assist of the game on the long-ball giving her 145 on the year, setting a new single season Northeastern record.
Hofstra's Shante Evans led all scorers with 15 points in the first, while Huber (11) and Tunstull (10) paced the Huskies.
Northeastern scored the first two baskets of the second half with transition baskets from Kerkhof to push the lead to seven and force a Hofstra timeout. After an Iervolino three pushed the NU lead to nine, Hofstra scored six straight to pull within three. Hofstra pulled as close as one in the second half, but a
Jewel Tunstull gave NU a 52-49 lead and it never looked back.
A Huber three midway through the second frame pushed the Northeastern lead back to seven, and a Conroy lay-in kept it there after the under-eight media timeout. A Tunstull three point play pushed the Northeastern lead to double digits for the first time at 64-54. Two free throws from Mark pushed the lead to twelve, and a Kerkhof triple had the Huskies lead at 15, forcing a Hofstra timeout.
An Iervolino three point play after the timeout gave Northeastern an 18 point lead and the rout was on. Another Iervolino three off a feed from Conroy pushed the lead to 20. It was Conroy's tenth helper of the game, marking the second time this season she has picked up ten or more assists. The Huskies closed out the contest with an 80-62 victory, putting an exclamation point on their regular season by winning four of their final five contests.
Shante Evans led all players for the Pride with 28 points and 14 rebounds, but her individual efforts weren't enough to overcome Northeastern's huge second half, which it outscored Hofstra 39-24. Tunstull and Iervolino led NU with 17 points each, adding nine and six rebounds, respectively. Conroy finished just shy of a triple double with nine points, ten assists and eight rebounds. Deanna Kerkhof was the fourth player in double figures with 11 points.
The Huskies will take a week off before heading to Upper Marlboro, Md. for the CAA tournament. Northeastern will play as the tenth seed, taking on the seventh seed George Mason. The tournament kicks off on Thursday, March 8, with the Huskies taking the court in game three of opening day action.
