The Northeastern swimming and diving team earned a split in a double-dual meet on Saturday at Barletta Natatorium. The Huskies defeated Rhode Island, 220-80, and fell to Dartmouth, 171-129. Head Coach
Roy Coates' team honored its three seniors—
Jill Kearns,
Rachael Peterson and
Anne Schaafsma—before the meet. The trio completed their home careers on Huntington Avenue with an impressive 14-1 all-time mark in their home pool.
Highlighting the day, Northeastern's
Anna Schegoleva set a new school record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.51.
Candace Young qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. And, senior
Jill Kearns was outstanding in her final home meet.
Northeastern, which hadn't lost a dual meet in three months, finished the season at 9-4 (4-2 CAA). The Huskies will now prepare for the CAA Championships, to be held later this month.
The Red and Black claimed first place in the day's opening event--the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Schegoleva,
Julia Alvarez,
Erica DeMunbrun and
Chelsea Lim touched the wall at 1:47.89. The Northeastern team of
Dana Schleif,
Keary McClernan, Alli Gielowski and
Nicole Colucci was sixth with a time of 1:52.55.
Colleen McCormack (10:26.04) placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle. Teammate
Jill Shields finished in 10:58.75, good for sixth, while
Jenny Doolin was seventh with a time of 11:02.72.
In the 200-yard freestyle,
Kelley Becherer finished third in 1:55.88, while
Megan Foran (1:56.14) was fourth and
Adriana Sepulveda (1:57.84) was sixth.
Schegoleva gave the Huskies their second first-place finish of the day, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.13. The victory was a preview of the record-setting performance she would turn in later in the meet. Schleif placed second (59.05) and
Allison Walker was sixth (1:01.13).
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Alvarez finished in 1:06.03 to take top honors. McClernan clocked in at 1:08.58, good for third.
Senior Kearns gave the Huskies their third first-place finish in as many events, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.56.
Julia Sepulveda (2:08.97) was fourth, while DeMunbrun was sixth (2:10.53).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Lim claimed fifth place with a time of 25.38, while teammates Becherer and Colucci registered identical times of 25.53 to tie for sixth.
As the meet reached its midpoint, Young, competing in her final home meet, placed third (282.35) in the 1-meter diving. Peterson placed sixth with a score of 254.80. Schaafsma, also diving in her final home meet, was ninth with a score of 221.95.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Becherer finished fourth (54.75), Foran fifth (54.84) and Lim sixth (55.22).
Then, in the afternoon's 10th event, came Schegoleva's school-record performance. The freshman from Larnaca, Cyprus, won the event with a time of 2:02.51. Schleif was sixth (2:09.58) and fellow Husky
Allison Walker was seventh (2:13.12).
Just as she had done in the 100-yard event, Northeastern's Alvarez captured first place in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:25.95. McClernan finished in 2:28.13 to claim third, while J. Sepulveda was seventh (2:32.26).
In the 500-yard freestyle, McCormack placed third (5:07.12), while Foran finished in fifth (5:13.69) and A. Sepulveda in eighth (5:14.49).
Meet-sensation Schegoleva claimed her third first-place finish of the day, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.05. Kearns touched the wall in 58.41, good for third, and DeMunbrun finished fifth in 58.77.
In the 3-meter diving, Young placed second with a score of 285.90, while Peterson amassed 278.65 points to finish in sixth, and Schaafsma collected 251.10 points to place seventh.
Kearns finished her career in fitting fashion, claiming first-place in her last-ever event at Barletta. The Milford, Mass., native won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.89. J. Sepulveda was second (2:10.49) and McClernan was ninth (2:19.23).
In the day's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Huskies teams captured fourth and sixth places. Lim, Foran, Becherer and A. Sepulveda finished in 3:40.84. The NU team of N. Colucci, J. Colucci, Demunbrun and Gielowski clocked in at 3:47.20.
Northeastern will now take two-and-a-half weeks to prepare for the CAA Championships. The conference meet will take place Feb. 22-25 at Jim McKay Natatorium on the George Mason University campus in Fairfax, Va.
