The VCU Rams scored six runs in the sixth and held on to defeat Northeastern 8-2 at Friedman Diamond on Saturday afternoon.
Jon Leroux and
Aaron Barbosa each had two hits for the Huskies in the loss.
Dylan Maki made his first start since March 17, going five and a third innings and allowing five earned runs on 11 hits. The Gloucester native sailed smoothly until the sixth, when he got into trouble, surrendering four runs.
For the Rams, Ryan Farrar pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Maki got into trouble in the first, allowing a run on a single by Joey Cujas, but got out of the inning when he got Taylor Perkins to hit a chopper back to the mound, he tagged Perkins and immediately threw over to third to pick off Jordan Weymouth, ending the inning.
Both pitchers settled into a groove until the bottom of the fifth inning when Northeastern got a run across to tie the game.
Alex McKeon walked to lead off the inning.
Oliver Hart then singled to left field.
Connor Lyons bunted the runners over to second and third for Barbosa, who brought McKeon home with a groundout to short.
John Puttress grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning with the score tied 1-1.
VCU broke through in the sixth, scoring six runs to take a 7-1 lead. Vimael Machin started things off with a one-out double to right center. Taylor Buren then singled through the left side, putting runners on the corners and Paul Nice hit an RBI single to left field. Bill Cullen kept things going with a single to left, loading the bases and forcing Maki out of the game in favor of senior
Sam Berg.
Berg wasn't able to record an out and after allowing three straight to reach base, was replaced by
Nick Berger. Berger was able to get out of the inning and finished the game for Northeastern on the mound, pitching three and two-thirds and allowing just one run on three hits.
The Huskies brought another run home in the bottom of the sixth. Leroux singled through the left side to start things off and
Jason Vosler crushed a double down the right field line, bringing Leroux around to score and cut the lead to 7-2.
The Rams added a run in the seventh on a solo home run from Buran.
The teams will wrap up the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
