Luc Rising, Andrew Wertz Selected In 2026 MLB Draft

BOSTON -- Two pitchers from the Northeastern University baseball team were selected in the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday afternoon. Senior transfer right-hander Luc Rising and graduate transfer right-hander Andrew Wertz both heard their names called on Sunday afternoon on day two of MLB's two-day draft.

The 68th draft pick in program history, Rising was selected in the 10th round, with the 289th overall pick, by the Los Angeles Angels. Rising transferred to Northeastern for the 2026 season after three years at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned 1st Team All-Liberty League honors as a reliever in 2024. It's the second year in a row a Division III transfer has been drafted in his first season as a Husky, following Jordan Gottesman's selection by the San Francisco Giants in 2025. Rising was a key piece of a Northeastern rotation that helped the Huskies win back-to-back CAA Championships and reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 1972-73. He finished the season with a 5-5 record and a 3.54 ERA, striking out 84 batters. His signature moment came in the CAA Tournament, where he struck out a career-high 11 batters in an elimination-game start against UNCW to help keep Northeastern's championship run alive.

Rounding out the Huskies' draft class, Andrew Wertz was selected in the 20th round, with the 596th overall pick, by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Wertz arrived at Northeastern as a graduate transfer after stops at Stonehill College and Salve Regina University, making him the second Division III transfer on the roster to hear his name called in this year's draft. Before Northeastern, Wertz was named the NECBL's Joe Nathan Top Relief Pitcher, was an NECBL All-Star and First Team All-NECBL Closer, and earned ABCA NCAA Division III Region 1 All-Region Second Team honors. As a Husky, Wertz worked out of the Northeastern bullpen in 2026, posting a 2-2 record with a 2.84 ERA and six saves. He was at his best when it mattered most, earning CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after not allowing a hit across 3.1 tournament innings while striking out six, helping propel the Huskies to a second straight CAA Championship.

It's the third straight season and the fourth of the last five in which Northeastern has had at least two draft picks in the MLB Draft. Since 2018, at least one Northeastern Husky has had their name called in the MLB Draft every year except for the shortened 2020 draft.
