Box Score

In its final game in Florida, Northeastern had a lead late, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and couldn't come back, losing to Penn 3-2.

Freshman first baseman Rob Fonseca stayed hot, collecting three of the Huskies six total hits on the day.

Sophomore Matt Cook made his first start of the season for Northeastern and kept the Huskies in the game, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Quakers starter Vince Voiro pitched a complete game and picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Penn went ahead 1-0 in the first after Cook started out a little wild, walking in a run. But Cook settled down, not allowing any more runs to come home on his watch.

The Huskies struggled against Voiro early on and the score stayed 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Northeastern finally broke through, scoring two runs to take the lead. Fonseca led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Alex McKeon followed with a single through the right side to move Fonseca to third and John Puttress brought him around to score with an RBI single. Jon Leroux grounded into a fielders choice but moved McKeon to third and Jason Vosler hit an RBI groundout to second, scoring McKeon. With Puttress on second, Connor Lyons hit a ball deep to center field but Greg Zebrack made a diving catch, getting to a ball that was over his head, ending the inning and keeping the score 2-1.

Michael Murphy came in and pitched a scoreless seventh, but was charged with two runs in the eighth when Penn re-took the lead on two wild pitches.

Northeastern had some life in the ninth when Fonseca singled to lead things off, but the game came to an abrupt end when Puttress hit a ball off Voiro's glove that went right to shortstop Kyle Toomey, who stepped on second and threw to first for the double play.

The Huskies have a day off as they head to Williamsburg to face William and Mary in their first CAA series of the season. Andrew Leenhouts will be on the hill for the Huskies as they look to continue their hot start into league play. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.
