Northeastern got a strong outing from sophomore starting pitcher
Matt Cook, but it wasn't enough as the UMass Minutemen defeated the Huskies 4-1 in the first round of the 2012 Beanpot Tuesday night in at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
Freshman second baseman
Jason Vosler went 2-4 with the lone RBI for Northeastern in the loss, raising his season average to .307.
Cook made his sixth start of the season for the Huskies pitching seven innings and allowing just four runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Conor LeBlanc started on the bump for the Minutemen, throwing seven and two-thirds innings while allowing one run on three hits.
The Huskies took the lead early, getting a run in the top of the second to go up 1-0. After
Jon Leroux got on with a walk, Vosler doubled to deep right field, bringing the catcher around to score. Northeastern failed to build on the first run however as
Oliver Hart grounded out and Vosler got thrown out on an attempt to steal third before first baseman
Tucker Roeder struck out swinging to end the inning.
UMass tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Dylan Begin and then took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Nik Campero.
An RBI single by Adam Picard brought home another run in the bottom of the sixth to give UMass a 4-1 lead. The Minutemen were threatening for more but Cook struck out Campero and got Begin to ground out to short to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The Huskies had runners on in the eighth as
Pete Castoldi led off the inning with a single to left, but
Connor Lyons grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
Aaron Barbosa walked, forcing UMass to bring in Ryan Lubreski on to pitch and Puttress flew out to center field, ending the inning.
Sam Berg came on and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Northeastern. The senior started the inning by striking out Rob McLam, but then allowed a single to Anthony Serino, who moved to third on a wild pitch. Berg then struck out Conley for the second out and got Picard to fly out to center to end the inning.
Down three runs in the ninth, Vosler hit a two-out single to right field to give Northeastern some life, but
Oliver Hart flew out to left field to end the game.
Northeastern will play another non-conference game with Harvard tomorrow afternoon at Friedman Diamond. The Crimson defeated Boston College 5-2 in the first Beanpot semifinal earlier in the day. Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
