Northeastern (13-15) snapped an eight game losing streak Wednesday afternoon, defeating Harvard (6-23) 9-4 at Friedman Diamond.
Sophomore right fielder
Aaron Barbosa had four hits, including his first home run of the season and shortstop
Oliver Hart hit a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game open for the Huskies.
Nick Berger made his second start of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out seven without walking any batters.
Dylan Maki came in during the eighth and
Oliver Hart finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
Baron Davis also started his second game of the season for Harvard, going five innings and allowing one run on four hits.
Harvard scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on a Mike Martin solo home run to make it 1-0 Crimson.
The Huskies tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when
Jason Vosler hit a two-out double to left center and Hart drove him home with a single down the right field line.
Berger remained effective in the fifth and after the Crimson threatened with a one-out single, he got Tanner Anderson to ground to
Pete Castoldi at third base who started a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth
Connor Lyons threw Jeff Reynolds out at the plate after a single by Steven Dill to keep the score tied 1-1.
In the home half of the inning,
Matt Miller and
Jon Leroux got on with back-to-back walks and Vosler hit a single down the right field line to score Miller. That brought Hart to the plate, who hit a three-run home run to left field that broke the game open and gave the Huskies a 5-1 lead. It was Hart's first home run of the season and second of his career.
Barbosa also hit his second career home run in the bottom of the seventh, a solo shot to push the Husky lead to 6-1.
After Berger allowed two runs in the top of the eighth,
Dylan Maki came on in relief. The junior retired the first two hitters he faced and allowed a single to Jake McGuiggan, which brought Jack Colton home to make it 6-4. Maki then struck out Nick Saathoff to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Hart reached on an error and then Castoldi was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Roeder then singled to left field, scoring Hart and advancing Castoldi to third.
Connor Lyons continued the inning with an infield single to first base that scored Castoldi and Barbosa singled to right field, loading the bases. Puttress brought the final run of the game home with a sacrifice bunt that scored Roeder from third.
The three-run eighth pushed the Husky lead to 9-4 and gave a cushion for Hart who came in to pitch in the final frame. The sophomore did not allow a baserunner and the game ended when
Connor Lyons came running in, making a diving catch to seal the win for Northeastern.
Northeastern will stay within the friendly confines of Friedman Diamond this weekend to welcome the George Mason Patriots for a three-game series. Friday's game will get underway at 3 p.m.
