Bryant bests Huskies 13-5

The Bryant Bulldogs got out to a quick start and stayed ahead the whole way, defeating Northeastern 13-5 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup between two New England schools.
 
The Huskies were led by freshman third baseman Rob Fonseca who had two hits and two RBIs and senior first baseman Tucker Roeder who also had two hits and an RBI in the loss.
 
Freshman Nick Berger made his third start of the season for the Huskies, but only made it through two innings, allowing six runs on five hits to take the loss.
 
Brian O'Neil pitched five scoreless innings for the Bulldogs, allowing just three hits and two walks to get his first win of the season.
 
Bryant got ahead early, scoring one run in the first inning on a fielder's choice by Mike Delponte that scored Connor Carignan. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the second to make it 3-0 when Dan Muscatello hit an RBI groundout to second that scored Matt Zanotta and Kevin Brown hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Carl Anderson.
 
The Bulldogs increased took control of the game in the third, scoring five runs to increase the lead to 8-0. The highlight of the inning was when Brown doubled to right center, scoring Muscatello and Anderson. Brown totaled four RBIs on the day for the Bryant.
 
By the sixth inning, Bryant had increased its lead to 12-0.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Northeastern got on the board and had some life, scoring five runs on four hits. Matt Miller led off the inning with his third walk of the day and Jon Leroux reached after a throwing error by Muscatello. Next up was freshman second baseman Jason Vosler who singled up the middle, scoring Miller for the Huskies first run of the day. Leroux and Vosler advanced to second and third base on the throw home and Northeastern had something cooking as there were still no outs.
 
Up came Fonseca, who had missed the last six games with an injury. The freshman smashed a double to left, scoring both runners and making the score 12-3. Shortstop Oliver Hart then reached on a throwing error by John Mullen that also allowed Fonseca to go to third. Roeder hit a sacrifice fly to score Fonseca and Connor Lyons and John Puttress hit back-to-back singles, bringing Roeder around to score and make it 12-5 before Miller, who started the inning, popped out to second base.
 
After Berger's early exit, Sean Lyons pitched an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs and Matthew Goreham pitched an inning and a third, also allowing two earned runs.
 
Greg Ferguson came on for the sixth and Michael Murphy pitched two innings of relief in the seventh and eighth, allowing just one run. Freshman Alex McKeon made his first appearance of his career on the mound, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
 
Northeastern is back in action this weekend when they host CAA-leading UNC-Wilmington for a three-game series. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
