Game 1 Recap
Tyler McSwain pitched a complete game to earn his sixth victory of the season as the UNCW Seahawks defeated Northeastern 7-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Oliver Hart had two hits and two RBIs for the Huskies in the loss, including a double and his second home run of the season.
Andrew Leenhouts pitched six innings, surrendering just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out nine.
McSwain went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits and walked only one batter in the win.
In the top of the second, the Seahawks threatened, putting runners on first and second, but second baseman
Jason Vosler made a great diving play on a ground ball to avoid and damage and end the inning.
Leenhouts also pitched out of a jam in the third, striking out Andrew Cain to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Oliver Hart hit a one-out double to right to get something going for Northeastern in the bottom half of the third, but
Connor Lyons struck out and
Aaron Barbosa grounded back to McSwain on the mound, ending the Huskies chance in the third.
Northeastern had another good chance in the fourth when catcher
John Puttress led off with an infield single to the shortstop and
Matt Miller walked on four pitches to give the Huskies two on with no out. But
Jon Leroux struck out swinging,
Rob Fonseca flew out to center field and Vosler grounded out to short, ending the inning.
Corey Dick hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the fifth to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.
UNCW added three more runs to their lead in the sixth, Leenhouts' last inning.
Michael Murphy entered the game on the mound in the top of the seventh and allowed the Seahawks fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly Drew Farber that scored Andrew Cain. UNCW made it 6-0 when Jake Koenig hit an infield single to the shortstop, scoring Hunter Ridge.
Mike Hanlon came on to get Michael Bass to fly out to right field for the final out of the seventh.
Northeastern put up three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Hart's second home run of the season. The Huskies' first run of the day came home when
Tucker Roeder hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Fonseca, who had singled earlier in the inning.
Hanlon stayed on and pitched a one-two-three eighth, striking out Cain to end the inning.
The Seahawks scored another run in the ninth on a solo home run by Ridge to push the lead to 7-3.
Game 2 Recap
UNCW got its second complete game performance of the day from Mat Batts en route to a 7-3 victory and a sweep of Northeastern in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
Jason Vosler hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, for the Huskies in the loss.
Freshman
Nick Berger gave the Huskies five innings on the mound, starting on three days rest after pitching two frames against Bryant on Tuesday. The Commack, N.Y. native allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out five batters.
Mat Batts went the distance for the Seahawks, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out 10.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first on a double play ball hit by Cain that scored Campbell, who led off the inning with a single.
A sacrifice fly by Campbell scored Ryan LaGrange in the second to make it 2-0.
UNCW got its third run of the game in the third inning when Thomas Pope stole second and an errant throw allowed Cain to come home, making it 3-0 in favor of the Seahawks.
Sam Berg came on to replace Berger in the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning, allowing just one runner to reach base on an error.
UNCW stretched the lead to 4-0 on a solo home run by Cain, the first batter of the top of the seventh inning.
Notheastern cut the UNCW lead in half in the bottom of the seventh. After Leroux reached base with a one-out single to right,
Jason Vosler hit a bomb over the right field wall for his sixth long ball of the season to make it 4-2.
Rob Fonseca made it three consecutive hits for the Huskies with a double down the left field line to keep the inning going and get another runner in scoring position. But Roeder struck out looking and
Connor Lyons flied out to left field to end the inning and keep the Huskies behind by two runs.
Berg got into trouble in the eighth, allowing three runs on four hits, and UNCW entered the ninth with a 7-2 lead. The senior reliever pitched four innings out of the bullpen, surrendering four runs on seven hits and was able to get through the ninth inning without any further damage.
Leroux reached on an error and Roeder hit a two-out single in the ninth, but the Huskies couldn't muster a comeback and the game ended 7-2 in favor of the Seahawks.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow morning, with the first pitch rescheduled for 11 a.m. due to possible weather in the Brookline area later in the day.
