After falling behind early, the Huskies comeback bid fell short Wednesday, losing to the UMass Minutemen (17-16) 7-6 in Amherst, Mass.

Matt Miller collected three hits and two RBIs for the Huskies in the loss, and Jason Roth also had three hits while making his second start of the season.

Matt Cook made his eighth start of the season for Northeastern (17-23) and pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits.

Conor LeBlanc started for the Minutemen but lasted just three innings, facing 14 batters and allowing three runs on five hits. Tim Stoops came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits.

UMass grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Both Kyle Adie and Anthony Serino had RBI singles for the Minutemen.

The Huskies tied the game with three runs of their own in the top of the third. Oliver Hart and Jason Roth led off the inning with back-to-back singles and although a fielder's choice groundout from Aaron Barbosa erased Roth, Hart moved over to third. That set up John Puttress, who hit a double to left center field that scored Hart for the Huskies' first run and moved Barbosa to third.

Miller then got the fourth Husky hit of the inning with a single to right that scored Barbosa. After Rob Fonseca struckout for the second out of the inning, Puttress came home to tie the game on an errant pickoff attempt to first base by LeBlanc.

The Minutemen wasted no time getting back out in front however, taking a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Tom Conley that scored Adie.

UMass added two more runs to the lead in the fourth to make it 6-3.

Northeastern got a run back in the seventh when Miller doubled Barbosa in from second for his third hit of the day, but the Minutemen increased the lead to 7-4 in the bottom half of the inning on a single up the middle by Adam Picard that scored Serino.

Oliver Hart came in to pitch the eighth and ninth for the Huskies, allowing just one run on two hits during his two innings of work.

Northeastern cut the lead to just one run in the eighth, scoring two more runs to make it 7-6 in favor of the Minutemen. With two outs in the inning, Roth got his third single of the day, advancing Connor Lyons to second, who worked a walk earlier in the inning.

Next, Barbosa singled to center to score Lyons and Pete Castoldi hit a pinch hit single through the right side to plate Roth, but Miller flied out to right to end the inning and NU couldn't muster any chances in the ninth against Leif Sorenson.

The Huskies will head to New York this weekend for a three-game CAA series with the Hofstra Pride. The series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m.
