NU alum Will Miller named to USRowing men's eight

Northeastern men's rowing alumnus Will Miller '07 was named to the men's eight crew that will represent the United States at the Final Qualification Regatta, May 20-23, in Lucerne, Switzerland, USRowing announced on Tuesday.

Miller, of Duxbury, Mass., is part of a men's eight lineup that consists of coxswain Zach Vlahos (Piedmont, Calif.), Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.), David Banks (Potomac, Md.), Steve Kasprzyk (Cinnaminson, N.J.), Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Ross James (DeKalb, Ill.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.).

Selection for the men's eight was determined based on lineup evaluations and training camp performance in Berkeley, Calif., under U.S. men's eight coach Mike Teti. The U.S. will need to win the event in order to qualify the boat for the 2012 Olympic Games. Entries for the Lucerne qualifier will be announced after the May 7 deadline.

Miller was twice a member of the U.S. World Championship Team (2009 and 2010), and was also a member of the U.S. U23 World Championship Team (2006). Miller's father, Bill, also was an outstanding Northeastern oarsman and competed at the 1972 Olympic Games.

Should the U.S. team qualify for the London games, Miller would be the 17th Northeastern alumnus to row in the Olympics. Since 1972, Northeastern rowing has been represented in all but one Olympic Games. Six former Huskies have captured medals, including Dan Walsh '02, who won bronze in 2008.

The rowing competition at the London games will be staged at Eton Dorney, in Buckinghamshire, July 28-Aug. 4.
