Northeastern announces 2012-13 men’s basketball schedule

2012-13 schedule  |  Buy tickets

BOSTON—Northeastern head coach Bill Coen today announced the men's basketball schedule for the 2012-13 season. The Huskies will play 15 home games at historic Matthews Arena—the most for the program since 2002-03. The challenging slate includes at least 10 games against teams that advanced to post-season play last year, and no fewer than 11 games against programs that posted 20 or more wins a season ago. The schedule also is highlighted by a mid-November trip to Anchorage to participate in the Great Alaska Shootout.

The non-conference home slate features match-ups against New England rivals Boston University, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts, as well as games against La Salle and NCAA Tournament participant UNC Asheville. In CAA play, the Huskies will welcome UNCW, Hofstra, George Mason, Georgia State, Drexel, William & Mary, Delaware, James Madison and Old Dominion to the arena. NU will travel to Princeton, Central Connecticut and UAB in non-conference play, in addition to its trip to Anchorage over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Huskies will play conference road games against George Mason, Drexel, Towson, Delaware, William & Mary, Hofstra, Old Dominion, UNCW and Georgia State.

For the third straight year, Northeastern will open the season against cross-town rival Boston University. Last season, NU claimed a thrilling 82-74 overtime victory in front of an overflow crowd at BU's Case Gym. This year's game, which will be the 140th in the longstanding rivalry, is set for Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., at Matthews Arena.

Northeastern will travel to Princeton on Nov. 13, looking to avenge a loss to the Tigers last season, before returning home to face Vermont on Nov. 17. The Huskies defeated the Catamounts last year, 53-51, on a buzzer-beater by Joel Smith, and they lead the all-time series with the former America East foe, 41-27.

Northeastern will then travel to Anchorage for its second-ever appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout. The Huskies will open the tournament on Nov. 21 against UC Riverside, and will face either Belmont or host Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 23. The championship and consolation games are schedule for Nov. 24. The 2012 tournament field includes four teams that made trips to the postseason in 2012: Alaska Anchorage (NCAA second round, Div. II), Belmont (NCAA second round), Loyola Marymount (CollegeInsider.com quarterfinals) and Oral Roberts (NIT first round). Texas State and Charlotte round out the eight-team field. In their previous trip to the Last Frontier, the Huskies earned a spot in the 1986 championship game after defeating nationally-ranked No. 2 Louisville and Utah State in the opening rounds. In the title tilt against No. 10 Iowa, Northeastern legend Reggie Lewis scored 29 points, and narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds. Iowa, though, shot 70 percent to secure the victory.

The Huskies will return to Boston for a four-game home stand when New England rivals Maine and Massachusetts visit the arena on Nov. 28 and Dec. 4, followed by La Salle on Dec. 8 and UNC Asheville on Dec. 18. NU and Maine will be meeting for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Huskies have won the last four head-to-head meetings and lead the all-time series, 64-46. NU will look to avenge two losses from last season when UMass makes its first trip to Huntington Avenue since 1989 and La Salle pays its first-ever visit to Matthews Arena. UNC Asheville also will play at the arena for the first time. In the only previous meeting with the Bulldogs, the Huskies rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit to escape Asheville with a thrilling 83-82 victory in a 2011 BracketBusters game.

NU closes the non-conference slate with road games against Central Connecticut on Dec. 21 and UAB on Dec. 29. The game in New Britain will be the first against CCSU since 2005 in a series NU leads, 8-2. The Huskies will face UAB for the first time in program history.

The Huskies' 18-game conference schedule tips off on Jan. 3 with a visit to George Mason. The teams played only once last season, with NU winning an 85-82 overtime affair in Boston. Northeastern then will quickly return home to face UNCW on Jan. 5. The Seahawks won the only meeting last season and were one of only two CAA opponents to win at Matthews Arena last year.

The Red and Black will then head on the road for four of its next five games, traveling to Drexel on Jan 9 and Towson on Jan. 12. The Dragons won both meetings last season, while NU swept the two-game season series from the Tigers. The Huskies will return home to host Hofstra on Jan. 16, before hitting the road again to face Delaware on Jan. 19 and William & Mary on Jan. 23. Northeastern won both meetings with Hofstra last season, split two games with Delaware, and went 2-1 against William & Mary, including a 57-49 victory in the opening round of the CAA Tournament.

NU then will return to the friendly confines of Matthews Arena for three straight home games, welcoming George Mason on Jan. 26, Georgia State on Jan. 30, and Drexel on Feb. 2. The Huskies defeated Georgia State in Boston last year as the squads split the season series.

Northeastern will travel to Hempstead on Feb. 6 to face Hofstra. The Huskies then will face a stretch of three games in five days, playing at Old Dominion on Feb. 9 before hosting William & Mary on Feb. 11 and Delaware on Feb. 13. ODU won the only meeting a season ago in Norfolk.

The Huskies will travel to UNCW on Feb. 16, then return to Boston on Feb. 20 to host James Madison. NU defeated the Dukes in Harrisonburg in the only meeting last season. The Red and Black will travel to Atlanta a week later, on Feb. 27, to face Georgia State before concluding the regular season at home on March 2 against Old Dominion.

The 2013 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championship is schedule for March 9-11 in Richmond, Va.

Seventh-year head coach Bill Coen's squad features a mix of accomplished veterans and highly-touted newcomers. NU returns four starters from a season ago. Senior guard Jonathan Lee was named to the All-CAA Third Team while sophomore Quincy Ford was named to the All-Rookie squad. Lee, Ford and senior Joel Smith earned their places among the nation's best players by ranking in seven different individual statistical categories. Northeastern registered double-digit wins in 2011-12 for the 10th consecutive season and the 13th time in 15 years.

Season tickets to all 15 men's basketball home games start at just $50 for young alumni and $100 for the general public. For more information, visit GoNU.com/tickets or contact the athletic ticket office at 617-373-4458 or huskytix@neu.edu.
