Dunn scores twice as Huskies tame Tigers, 3-1

Box Score

BOSTON—The Northeastern field hockey team improved to 2-1 in CAA play with a 3-1 victory over Towson on Friday night in Maryland.

Kelly Dunn bookended two goals for Northeastern (6-9, 2-1) around a score by teammate Lindsay Bennett—all in the second half—as the Huskies outshot the Tigers 14-7. Northeastern enjoyed a decisive 15-3 advantage in penalty corners on the evening.

Northeastern's defense limited Towson to just one shot on goal in the opening half. The Huskies, for their part, put five attempts on goal but could not solve the Tigers' Brittany Varacallo.

NU finally broke through at the 38-minute mark when Kelly Dunn collected a rebound and scored from close range to give the Huskies the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Dunn's first of the season and first-ever in a CAA contest.

Just over two minutes later, teammate Lindsay Bennett gave Northeastern a 2-0 lead when she scored off a penalty corner. Emmy Zweserljn assisted on the Bennett tally.

The Huskies put the game out of reach when Dunn again found the back of the cage at the 46-minute mark.

For Dunn, it was a career night. The two goals equaled her career total. The redshirt junior from Ashburnham, Mass., has started every game this season for the Huskies. Her previous point this season came on an assist on Bennett's game-winning goal against La Salle on Oct. 6.

Towson found the scoring column in the game's late stages when Kathleen Morris buried a shot from the top off a corner opportunity.

Northeastern will return home to host Delaware on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Dedham Field. The Huskies will hold a senior day ceremony before the game. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
