DEDHAM, Mass. – Natalie Stewart scored a pair of goals, and the Northeastern field hockey team (4-7) recorded three second half tallies to knock off La Salle on Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field, 5-3.
The victory snaps a six-game winless streak for NU, which outshot the Explorers 18-14 in the game.
Emmy Zweserijn,
Lindsay Bennett and
Vanessa Pryor all scored for the Huskies, while
Becky Garner made six saves in goal.
The Huskies wasted no time in jumping out to an early 1-0 lead as Stewart buried her third goal of the season just 2:22 into the contest when fired a low shot from the left side into the lower right corner.
NU, which held a 7-6 edge in shots (5-4 shots on goal) during the opening 35 minutes, continued to pressure the Explorers as the half wore on, but it was La Salle which netted the game-tying goal five minutes later on a goal from Maddy Tettelbach. After Garner saved an initial shot from Olivia Shoemaker, Tettelbach was in the right spot for the rebound, and sent it into the right corner to level the score at one aside.
Stewart would give NU the lead once again in the ninth minute with a beautiful goal when she batted the ball out of midair and past Shaffer for her second of the afternoon and fourth of the season.
The Huskies had a chance to extend their lead late in the half when Bennett collected the ball off a shot from
Kelly Dunn, but her bid rang off the post.
Coming out of the halftime break, La Salle brought the score back to even as Tettlebach notched her second of the game. Following a broken corner play less than five minutes into the second, the Explorers recovered as Heather Barnetta sent a ball into the circle to Tettlebach waiting at the left post, where she redirected it into the back of the cage.
Stewart made a bid for her third goal of the game with 22 minutes to play in regulation on a hard run into the circle, but she was broken up by Shaffer. Bennett, however, crashed the cage looking for the rebound, but Shaffer was there once again to deny the Huskies.
Northeastern would cash in with 20:15 remaining in the second half when Zweserijn registered her sixth goal of the year. After taking a feed from
Alyssa Carlson, Zweserijn coasted down the goal line before letting a shot go from a tough angle that got just inside the left post for a 3-2 NU lead.
Bennett would extend the Husky lead to two less than eight minutes later when she redirected a long hit from
Kelly Dunn past Shaffer for her fourth goal of the season, and Pryor got into the act in the 62nd minute with a similar play off a pass from
Caroline Judge.
Shoemaker would bring the Explorers back to two with 5:58 left in the second half, but Garner made a couple big saves down the stretch to secure the win for the Huskies.
Northeastern resumes conference play on Friday when No. 18 Drexel visits Dedham Field for a 6 p.m. matchup.
