Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – The Northeastern field hockey team dropped, 5-1, to top-seeded Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium in Newark, Del.

Three Huskies were named to the 2013 CAA All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend, in Lindsay Bennett, Natalie Stewart and Becky Garner. All three were among the most deserving of the field of players from four CAA teams.

Becky Garner registered five saves in goal for Northeastern (8-10-0 overall). The Blue Hen's defense, meanwhile, allowed just one goal for the Black and Red.

Delaware controlled the tempo of the game early on, netting its first goal off the stick of Esmee Peet less than a minute into the contest. Peet, who earned conference Rookie of the Year and Player of the year, made the shot off of the Blue Hen's first penalty corner.

Before the Huskies could post a shot, UD's Kasey Prettyman scored from the left side in the 3rd minute on an opportunity created by the second penalty corner of the game. Heather Harman inserted the ball before Allie Mikelson fed the ball to Prettyman for the 2-0 lead.

The Huskies were awarded their first corner with 7:52 on the clock, but Delaware's keeper Sarah Scher notched her first save of the day on a shot from Caroline Judge.

The Blue Hens once again held the Huskies without a shot before Maddie O'Beirne tallied her fourth goal of the season to put Delaware up, 3-0. The shot came in the 18th minute off the Hen's sixth corner of the contest.

Northeastern looked to get on the board once again with a corner play. With the ball on the left side, Bennett fed the ball to Emmy Zweserijn who shot wide, ending the scoring threat. NU immediately earned another penalty corner, but once again fell short after Scher tallied her fourth save.

With 20 seconds left in the first half, the Megan Winsett buried Delaware's fourth goal to keep the Huskies scoreless entering intermission.

NU held the Blue Hens to two shots before Delaware's Michaela Patzner posted an insurance goal in the 57th minute to go ahead, 5-0.

With nine minutes left in regulation, Northeastern got on the board thanks to a shot 1-yard out from the right corner off the stick of senior captain Lindsay Bennett. With the goal, Bennett notched her 11th on the season to close out her collegiate career.

With the loss, the Huskies (8-13, 3-3 CAA) must wait until tonight to hear their possible future in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA selection show is set for 10 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10 on NCAA.com.
