HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 3 Northeastern women's soccer team claimed the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship when it upset No. 1 James Madison, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies (6-8-6) secured the program's second CAA title and a berth into the NCAA tournament. NU will find out its upcoming opponent during the NCAA selection show Monday afternoon.
Hanna Terry was named the CAA Championships' Most Outstanding Player while NU goalkeeper
Paige Burnett, defender
Bianca Calderone and midfielder
Hannah O'Donnell were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Burnett was tested early when she made a diving save off a header in the first two minutes of the match.
Skylar LeBlanc answered for the Huskies when she put a shot on net 25 yards out from the left side, but JMU (15-5-1) goalkeeper Ellen Forrest was there to make the save to keep the game scoreless five minutes in.
O'Donnell gave NU a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when
Haley Sinclair made a crossing pass from the left side that found
Morgan Hilby's foot. Hilby's shot was deflected back out to the top of 18-yard box where O'Donnell gathered the rebound and drilled a shot into the lower-left corner.
The Dukes, however, answered less than one minute later when Lauren Wilson led a counter attack down the left side and her crossing pass found Katie Hyland whose hard one-touch shot beat Burnett.
The two teams exchanged shots before the Huskies earned a corner kick in the 25th minute. Terry lined up for the corner and found Hilby, whose header landed on Zoller's foot right along the goal line. Zoller tapped in what stood to be the game-winning goal.
The Huskies took a 2-1 lead into the break while holding a 9-6 advantage in shots a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Burnett made four saves in the opening period to help secure the halftime lead.
The Dukes entered the second half with more vigor as they outshot NU, 8-1, in the final period. JMU's attack started with a long throw in near the left corner that was corralled by Lauren Wilson in the box. Wilson's shot was blocked, and the rebound was gathered by Hyland whose shot went wide of the net.
Three minutes later Wilson made a bid to tie the game, 2-2, when her shot from eight-yards out was heading towards the near right post, but Burnett was there to make a diving save and maintain the NU lead.
The Dukes threatened again in the 79th minute when consecutive shots inside the 18 were blocked by the Northeastern defense. A long rebound ended up on the foot of a JMU midfielder, but her shot from 35 yards out was saved by Burnett.
Terry provided the Huskies' insurance goal in the 82nd minute when she attacked down the middle of the field and fired a shot from 15 yards out that found the bottom-right corner to give NU the 3-1 lead.
