NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After falling behind 2-0 midway through the second period, the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (9-5-1) stormed back to score three unanswered goals to top No. 11/10 Notre Dame and capture the Shillelagh Tournament on Saturday night at Compton Family Ice Arena, 3-2.
Dalen Hedges scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Huskies, who matched last season's win total with the victory on Saturday.
Torin Snydeman and
Braden Pimm also scored for Northeastern, while
Clay Witt made 31 saves in goal to earn All-Tournament honors along with Pimm.
NU outshot the Irish 35-33 in the game, was 1-of-8 on the power play and won 35-of-66 face-offs. Notre Dame went 1-of-4 on the man advantage.
Notre Dame came out hard in the first period, controlling the pace of play and pressuring Witt and the Husky defense. Witt was forced to make back-to-back saves midway through the frame when the Irish transitioned three-on-two following a face-off win in the defensive zone, but the NU goalkeeper stood his ground to prevent the ND bid.
The physical play picked up during the final 10 minutes of the stanza, with a combined eight minor penalties called between the two squads. Notre Dame capitalized on the man advantage with 6:26 left to play when Shayne Taker netted his fourth goal of the season. After taking a pass from T.J. Tynan, Bryan Rust went across the blue line to his partner Taker at the left side. Taker then took a couple strides towards goal before firing a shot on goal that hit a body on its way past Witt for a 1-0 Notre Dame lead.
The NU offense woke up after the goal, and nearly knotted the score at one when the line of
Kevin Roy,
John Stevens and
Braden Pimm threw several shots on goal, ultimately resulting in a Northeastern power play.
Notre Dame continued to dominate the play through the first half of the second period, and extended its lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded tally midway through the frame, but a Northeastern tally late in the period sent the teams into the dressing rooms with a 2-1 game.
The Irish took a two-goal lead with 10:58 remaining in the period when Stephen Johns potted his fourth goal of the season when he followed his own rebound during a three-on-one shorthanded break, beating Witt five-hole for the score.
Northeastern, which called timeout following the Notre Dame shorthanded goal, came alive after Johns' tally, and nearly cut into the lead when
Colton Saucerman ripped a shot from the point that rang off the crossbar.
The Huskies would finally solve Summerhays with 7:50 left in the stanza on Snydeman's fourth goal of the year.
Adam Reid began the play for the Huskies was causing a turnover in the offensive zone. Reid then kept the puck in the zone and waited for Snydeman to join the play before tossing a pass into the slot. Snydeman then quickly gathered the puck and snapped a shot over Summerhays' shoulder for the score.
Northeastern had several chances to tie the game at two when NU was awarded a five-on-three power play, and the Huskies generated multiple bids on goal from Pimm, Roy and Stevens, but Summerhays stood his ground to keep the game 2-1.
The third period was a back and forth bout, with NU holding a slight 11-10 edge in shots on goal, but it was the Huskies who potted the lone two goals to complete the comeback. Northeastern leveled the score at two with 9:59 remaining in regulation when Pimm knocked home his seventh goal of the season, and fifth power play tally. Roy created the play by keeping his composure with the puck, dragging two defensemen to the left side of the ice before sliding the puck along the crease to Pimm for the tap-in.
Notre Dame tested Witt several times during the final 10 minutes, but the NU defense worked hard to keep the Irish at the perimeter to limit the significant scoring bids.
NU took its first lead of the night with less than three minutes left thanks to hard work from Pimm behind the goal to find Hedges skating towards the cage. Pimm then sent the puck out in front, where Hedges chipped it over the glove of Summerhays. Notre Dame would pull Summerhays with a minute left in regulation, but a strong stick check from Roy in the defensive zone helped ice the game.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday when Northeastern returns home to host No. 4/4 Providence at 8 p.m. from Matthews Arena.
