NEW ORLEANS—The Northeastern women's basketball team (6-5, 0-0 CAA) could not stop a red-hot Green Wave offense as the Huskies closed out day one of the Tulane DoubleTree Classic with an 85-49 loss to Tulane (8-3, 0-0 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.
Junior captain
Amencie Mercier led Northeastern in scoring for the first time in her career with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
DaChe Williams logged a career-best 10 points,
Jewel Tunstull and
Tiffany Montagne tallied nine a piece, while
Samantha DeFreese and
Kazzidy Stewart chipped in four points each to close out the scoring column for the Huskies.
Reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Danielle Blagg set the pace for the Green Wave and led all scorers with 20 points. Tierra Jones, Chinwe Duru, and Tiffany Dale joined Bladd in double figures, accumulating 39 points, collectively.
The Green Wave was strong right out of the chute, posting and early 11-0 advantage. A jumper from Mercier put the Huskies on the board, but Tulane landed a 3-pointer to go ahead, 14-2, through five minutes of play.Â
Play evened out over the next three minutes as neither team could string consecutive shots. NU and Tulane exchanged baskets until the Green Wave broke away with back-to-back threes for a 36-16 lead. Montagne slowed Tulane's momentum with two shots of her own to come within 16, but the Green Wave used a 10-0 surge for a 28-point advantage.
An Iriah layup at the buzzer sent Northeastern into the break, trailing 50-24.
Mercier kicked off the second half with quick a fast break layup, however that would be the only shot for the Huskies over the next four minutes. NU surrendered six points during that spread before a small 7-2 run closed the gap, 58-33, but that was the closest the Huskies would get for the remainder of the game. The Green Wave earned a spot in the tournament championship after closing out the game with an 85-49 victory.
For the game, Northeastern shot 30 percent (18-61) from the field, 16 percent (3-19) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (10-20) from the charity stripe. Tulane shot 52 percent (35-67) from the floor, 37 percent (7-19) from beyond the arc, and 62 percent (8-13) from the free-throw line. The Green Wave won the rebounding battle 49-36.
Northeastern will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m., for day two of the Tulane DoubleTree Classic as it faces Northwestern in the tournament consolation game.
