BOSTON — In front of a raucous, season-high 3,463 fans, the Northeastern men's basketball team clinched at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title, besting James Madison, 66-64, on Wednesday night at historic Matthews Arena. The regular season title is NU's first in 20 years and first-ever in eight seasons as a member of the CAA.

With the game tied, 64-64, freshman David Walker (Stow, Ohio) connected on a 15-foot baseline jumper with just two seconds remaining, delivering the Huskies their 11th regular season conference title in program history. NU improved to 13-3 in CAA play and 18-10 overall.

Sophomore Quincy Ford (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led NU with 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half, along with seven rebounds. Fellow sophomore Reggie Spencer (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) tallied 13 points and five rebounds. Standout freshmen Walker and Zach Stahl (Chanhassen, Minn.) finished with 11 and nine points, respectively. Sophomore Demetrius Pollard (Virginia Beach, Va.) chipped in with eight of his own on a perfect shooting night, while senior stalwarts Jonathan Lee (Flint, Mich.) and Joel Smith (Leander, Texas), who continues to work his way back from injury, combined for 11 points.

Redshirt senior A.J. Davis carried the Dukes (15-13, 9-6 CAA) with a game-high 21 points. Devon Moore added 12, followed by Alioune Diouf with 11 and Charles Cooke with 10.

Coming off consecutive losses for the first time in more than two months, Northeastern came out firing. The Huskies hit their first three shots to grab a 7-1 lead, and led by as many as nine before taking a 32-26 advantage into the locker room.

After a Lee jumper gave NU a 34-26 lead just moments into the second half, the Huskies fell victim to a 10-0 JMU run that changed the landscape of the game. After a minute of even play, the Dukes rattled off five straight points to take a 43-38 lead with 14:11 to play. NU responded with a 6-0 run to grab a one point lead and led again, 48-47, just moments later.

The Dukes, though, flipped the momentum once more, using a 7-0 run to make it 54-48 with 8:00 remaining. The six-point lead proved to be JMU's largest of the game.

Characteristic of the Huskies' season thus far, Northeastern responded quickly with six unanswered points to square the contest, 54-54. The game was hotly contested the rest of the way, with neither team managing more than a three-point edge.

With the two sides knotted again at 61-61 with 2:25 to play, a trio of Huskies free throws put the home side up, 64-61, before a JMU trey by Davis tied it for the final time with 19 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Lee drove the baseline, drew the defense, then delivered a pass to Walker who calmly poured in the eventual game-winning jumper from the baseline with just two ticks remaining on the clock. A desperation three by the Dukes came up short and a put-back came after time had expired.

In the first half, Northeastern hit its first three shots to race out to an early 7-1 lead. Ford opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and classmate Spencer followed with two solid post finishes. JMU responded with a 6-0 spurt of its own to level the score, 7-7, at the 15 minute mark.

Northeastern then went cold, missing its next five shots over a nearly four-minute span before Spencer beat the shot clock with his first career 3-pointer, hitting from the left wing. JMU again answered, hitting consecutive lay-ins to take an 11-10 lead with just over 11 minutes to play.

Davis connected on a 3-pointer from the left side to give the Dukes a four-point lead before Pollard responded with a three of his own from the right wing. A Dukes tip-in was answered by back-to-back layups by Stahl to give the Huskies the lead again, 17-16, at the 8:22 mark.

Smith, who continues to work his way back from injury, extended the 10-0 NU run with two of his trademark long balls to give the Huskies a 23-17 lead with 4:13 to go.

The Dukes cut the margin to three, 23-20, hitting three of four free throws. Stahl then beat the shot clock with a three from the left wing and Walker corralled a steal and converted a traditional three-point play to push the NU lead to nine, 29-20, at the 2:14 mark.

Davis hit his second three of the evening to end the run and Moore added a lay-in to cut the Huskies lead to four. Walker regained the momentum for the home side with a trey from the right corner, before Moore hit one of two free throws to close the half with NU leading, 32-26.

For the game, Northeastern shot 49 percent (20-41) from the floor, including 53 percent (8-15) from long range. The Huskies shot a blistering 90 percent (18-20) from the free throw line. James Madison hit 40 percent (21-52) of its shot attempts, including 39 percent (7-18) from beyond the arc. The Dukes also were proficient at the charity stripe, hitting 83 percent (15-18). JMU out-rebounded the Huskies, 29-22, though the rebounding battle was even in the second half (12-12).

While the victory gives Northeastern a share of the CAA regular season title, the Huskies still have work to do. With two games remaining, NU is not yet assured of the coveted No. 1 seed in next month's conference tournament.

Northeastern will enjoy its longest layoff since the holiday break, taking a week off from competition after a grueling stretch of six games in 15 days. The Huskies will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. NU will then close the regular season on March 2 against Old Dominion in Boston.
