NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Northeastern got back in the win column on Monday, snapping a five-game skid in a 7-0 shutout victory at Central Connecticut State. Junior Matt Cook got the midweek call for the Huskies (11-11, 2-7 CAA) and pitched well, allowing just five hits in 7.0 scoreless innings with three walks and a strikeout. Seven different Huskies got into the hitting mix, including Rob Fonseca (2-for-4, 2RBI, 1R) and catcher Josh Treff (2-for-4) who came away with multiple base knocks.

Leadoff man Aaron Barbosa (1-for-5, 2R) and Connor Lyons (1-for-4, 2R), who was hitting in the two-spot for the first time this season, both scored two runs apiece to help spark a Northeastern offense which was held scoreless in its last three outings. Justin Kessler (1-for-3, 1RBI, 1R) at DH and Keith Kelly (1-for-3, 1RBI), making his first start at second base, also got into the hit column for the Red and Black in the win.

The Huskies struck first in the fourth inning, kickstarted by a Barbosa single through the right side. The junior stole second immediately to put himself into scoring position, and the move paid off when Jason Vosler (1-for-4, 2RBI, 1R) sent a line into right field for an RBI single. The Huskies held a tenuous 1-0 lead for three more innings, thanks to solid work on the mound from Cook.

NU added another score in the top half of the seventh with yet another leadoff hit, this time coming from Fonseca who pushed one through the left side. Fonseca advanced after a single from Treff, and made it safely to third after a fielder's choice getting left fielder Sean Lyons (0-for-3) out at first.

Three runs came home an inning later after a CCSU pitching change. Savatsky came on in relief and walked the first two batters he faced. After drawing the free bases, Connor Lyons and Jason Vosler took more with a double steal to put two runners in scoring positions with no outs. Fonseca earned his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Lyons. Vosler came home on the next at bat when Kessler rippled one to center to make it 4-0. A Treff single and an errant throw quickly put Kessler on third, and Burcroff, who came in to pinch hit for S. Lyons, sent a deep sacrifice fly to left to bring him in.

After Michael Foster made his 2013 debut on the mound and held the Blue Devils at bay again, the Huskies added two more runs in the top of the ninth for good measure. Barbosa reached on a fielder's choice and, as he tends to do, stole second to move into scoring position. C. Lyons boomed a double to right field to put runners on second and third with just one out. Vosler grounded out to second, but it scored Barbosa, and Lyons came home on the very next at bat after a Rob Fonseca double.

With the win, Northeastern returns to Boston for a showdown with Boston College tomorrow at Friedman Diamond.
