LOUISVILLE – The Northeastern field hockey team (3-4) received a goal from Lindsay Bennett in the fourth minute, but No. 19 Louisville answered with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation to defeat the Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium, 2-1.

Becky Garner made eight saves for the Huskies in the losing effort as the Cardinals outshot NU 13-9, including a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Louisville also earned 10 penalty corners during the game to Northeastern's three.

Northeastern took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest when Bennett netted her third goal of the season. After Louisville goalkeeper Sydney King turned aside an initial shot from Natalie Stewart, Bennett was waiting for the rebound and knocked it home.

The Huskies would continue to pepper King throughout the duration of the first half, putting seven of their eight shots on goal, including a team-high three from Caroline Judge. NU also had three corner opportunities during the opening 35 minutes while Louisville was held to two.

At the other end of the field, Garner and the Northeastern defense kept the potent Louisville attack at bay, holding it to four shots (two shots on goal) and two corner tries.

The game became more physical at the start of the second half, with Louisville picking up three green cards in a span of four minutes. The Cardinals, however, were able to recover from the fouls to net two straight goals late in the half.

The first came with 13:50 left in regulation when Erin Schneidtmiller recorded her fourth goal of the season. Following a long hit down to Kelsey Rosenmeier in the middle of the circle, she spotted Schneidtmiller near the left post, and quickly fed her with a pass for the score.

When Kaci Coveleski and Katherine Gwynne-Wood were assessed matching yellow cards in the 61st minute, the Cardinals took their first lead of the afternoon on a goal from Megan Anstotz with 6:17 to play. After drawing one of its eight second half penalty corners, Alyssa Voelmle fired a shot on goal that Anstotz was able to get a stick on and redirect past Garner for the eventual game-winner.

The Huskies will be back in action on Friday when Northeastern hosts Hofstra at 6 p.m. on Dedham Field for the start of conference play.
