NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 11/11 Northeastern men's ice hockey team generated 36 shots on goal against No. 15/15 Notre Dame, but could not solve goaltender Steven Summerhays as the Fighting Irish blanked the Huskies on Saturday night at Compton Family Ice Arena, 3-0.
The Huskies, who outshot UND 36-33 in the game, had six opportunities on the power play during the contest, tossing six shots on goal. Notre Dame, meanwhile, went 1-of-3 on the power play and won 34-of-63 face-offs.
Clay Witt made 30 stops in goal for the second straight game as NU saw its eight game conference unbeaten streak com to an end.
Both teams made a point of getting the puck to the net and crashing the cage in the first period with the Huskies outshooting UND 14-10, but it was the Fighting Irish who potted two goals in four minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Vince Hinostroza put Notre Dame up 1-0 exactly six minutes into the contest when UND pounced on a loose puck in the neutral zone and quickly transitioned to offense. After taking a pass from Peter Schneider, Mario Lucia flew down the left side before spotting Hinostroza cutting to the net on the far side. Lucia then slid the puck to Hinostroza, who roofed a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Witt for his sixth goal of the season.
NU had some of its best chances near the midway mark of the frame as
Mike McMurtry picked off a clearing pass inside the blue line before tossing a backhander on goal that Summerhays got the blocker on. Later on,
Josh Manson fired a shot in on goal from the point that Summerhays got a pad on before covering as
Torin Snydeman and
Mike Szmatula looked for the rebound.
Notre Dame went on the power play at 10:02 of the first period, and used just 15 seconds of the man advantage to take a two-goal lead on Lucia's 13th of the season. The Fighting Irish won the ensuing face-off in the NU zone before making crisp passes across the zone before Hinostroza ultimately put it on the tape of Lucia on the doorstep, who pounded it home inside the right post.
The Huskies nearly cut into the deficit at the tail end of the stanza as Szmatula battled in the neutral to create a chance for
Adam Reid entering the zone, resulting in a wrister off the left pipe.
NU held a slight 13-10 edge in shots during the second period, but a shorthanded tally from Peter Schneider less than five minutes into the frame gave Notre Dame a commanding three-goal lead. With Ali Thomas in the box for a tripping minor, Schneider jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and went in uncontested on Witt. Schneider then faked right before firing a backhander under the crossbar.
The Huskies had a flurry of chances after the Schneider marker, including a turnaround shot from
Dalen Hedges at the right faceoff dot that Summerhays got a pad on. Later in the shift,
Kevin Roy and
Braden Pimm nearly connected for NU's first tally of the night, but Summerhays just got a toe on Pimm wrist shot from the slot.
Northeastern went back on the power play with 1:38 left in the stanza, and the Fighting Irish thought they had netted their second shorthanded goal of the frame when Jeff Costello knocked home a puck on a three-on-one, but the officials ruled that the puck crossed the goal line after time had expired.
Pimm and Szmatula each had a couple chances to try and help the Huskies cut into the Notre Dame lead in the third period, most notably when NU caught Summerhays out of position with the puck on Pimm's stick. The Fighting Irish defense, however, smothered Pimm in between the hashmarks before he could send the puck into the open net.
At the other end, Witt kept the deficit at three with less than six minutes left when he stoned Lucia on a slapshot from atop the left face-off dot. NU had a final bid in the final two minutes when
Zach Aston-Reese's blast from the left side caught the pad of Summerhays, but McMurtry couldn't knock home the rebound.
The Huskies will have a week off before returning to action on Monday, Feb. 3 for the 62nd Beanpot Tournament. Northeastern will square off with Harvard in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. before No. 2/2 Boston College and Boston University meet in the second semifinal at 8 p.m. Both games will be aired live on NESN.
