Season StatsDEDHAM, Mass. – In a back-and-forth game on Sunday at Dedham Field, the No. 15 Northeastern Huskies suffered their first defeat in seven weeks to the No. 20 Maine Black Bears, 2-1, in overtime.
Â
The loss brings an end to the Huskies' 11-game winning streak, the fourth longest in program history. It was also the third straight overtime game for
Cheryl Murtagh's squad, a program first.
Â
Emma Lamison opened the games scoring a little less than 10 minutes in. The sophomore forward took the ball inside the circle, made a few dekes to shake off the Maine defenders and ripped one to the left corner of the net that beat the keeper, Emily Corbet, for the goal.
Â
The rest of the first half was a defensive battle between the two teams. Sophomore
Becky Garner played extremely well, making saves off corners and breakaways to keep the Huskies' lead safe over the game's first 35 minutes.
Â
Maine tied the game just seven minutes into the second half off a corner. The Black Bears inserted the ball and set up Annabelle Hamilton for a shot that Nicole Sevey deflected into the top right corner to tie the game.
Â
For the remainder of the second half the two teams again showcased their strong defense and kept one another off the scoreboard. At the end of the 70 minutes NU and Maine were tied at 1.
Â
The Black Bears won the game at the 2:43 mark of the first overtime period when Hamilton converted on a penalty shot opportunity.
Â
Kelly Dunn led all Huskies with three shots, while Garner made five saves in the setback.
Â
The Huskies return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 24 when they hit the road for a 7 p.m. showdown against CAA rival Delaware. Two days later, NU faces another conference foe in Towson at Dedham Field. That game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
