BOSTON – In its first dual meet of the 2014-15 season, the Northeastern women's swimming and diving team swam away with the best time in nine out of 16 events en route to a 161-119 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday.
Â
Sophomore transfer
Taylor Ellis kicked off her Husky career by winning both the 100 breaststroke (1:04.04) and the 500 freestyle (5:05.77). Senior co-captain
Anna Schegoleva swept both backstroke events, earning times of 57.72 and 2:02.76 in the 100 and 200 events, respectively. The Huskies scored an impressive 47 points during the afternoon when Ellis and Schegoleva were in the pool.
Â
Northeastern started the meet off with a bang in the 200 medley relay when its A and B squads took the top two spots in the event, giving the Huskies a 15-2 lead. The A-team combination of Schegoleva, Ellis, Touchette-McGowan, and Green landed a first-place time of 1:44.68.
Â
UNH managed to bounce back in each of the next two events, claiming victories in both the 1000 and 200 freestyle to cut the NU lead to 29-26. Freshman
Sara Touchette-McGowan was locked in a tight race the whole way with New Hampshire's Liza Baykova in the 200, but tapped the wall just 0.11 seconds after Baykova.
Â
Leading by three, Northeastern distanced itself from the Wildcats in the next two events, adding 29 points to its total to build a 58-35 advantage. Freshman
Christine Leong topped Sarah Broderick of UNH for second place in the 100 backstroke with a 58.54, while newcomer
Samira Hoesl had a time of 1:05.79 in the 100 breaststroke.
Â
Delaney Lanker came within a second of Wildcat Jessica Harper's first-place time in the 200 butterfly, and New Hampshire was able to cut the meet score to 72-59 after seven events, placing first and second in the 50 freestyle.
Â
Northeastern's diving team saw great success on Satruday afternoon.
Jacquelyn Gover celebrated a win in the 3-meter dive (252.25), while teammate
Caroline Gonsalves achieved a 269.20 in the 1-meter. The Huskies swept the podium in both diving events, outscoring UNH 32-6.
Â
Like in the 200 freestyle, Touchette-McGowan and Baykova were neck and neck throughout the entirety of the 100 freestyle, but it was Baykova who escaped with a 0.08-second win, the closest margin of victory in the meet.
Â
Schegoleva's win in the 200 backstroke helped put Northeastern up 109-79, and Hoesl's time of 2:26.68 in the 200 breaststroke brought the Huskies one step closer to sealing the meet victory. After Ellis gave NU its first individual freestyle win in five events on the afternoon, Touchette-McGowan led Lanker and
Erica DeMunbrun to a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 butterfly, extending the Huskies' lead to 145-100.
Â
Leading 161-103 after 14 events, Northeastern head coach
Roy Coates was content on where his team stood, and had the Huskies compete in exhibition during the last two events. Schegoleva added an individual win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.48, while the Huskies' A squad of Ellis,
Jessica Colucci, Hoesl, and Green fell just 0.42 seconds off the pace of New Hampshire's A team, who also competed in the final event as an exhibition.
Â
Northeastern (1-0, 0-0 CAA) will travel to George Mason next weekend from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 to compete in a meet against the Patriots and two other CAA schools, Towson and College of Charleston. The Huskies will come away from the competition with three dual meet results.Â
