Postgame InterviewBROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Northeastern women's soccer team clinched the 2014 CAA regular season title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Drexel on Senior Day at Parsons Field. The win gives the Huskies a bye to the CAA semifinals and home-field advantage throughout the tournament.Â
Junior Shayna Blackwood scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute, firing home a cross from freshman Kayla Cappuzzo on the right wing to give the Huskies (12-4-3, 7-1-1 CAA) their NCAA-leading 14th shutout of the year and second regular season title in program history (2009). The goal extended Blackwood's scoring streak to three straight games.
The Northeastern defense was superb yet again, holding Drexel (7-8-3, 4-3-2 CAA) without a shot on goal. The Dragons could muster only three attempts total and were limited to just one corner kick.Â
The Huskies' offense generated 12 shots, including four on goal, and earned eight corner kicks in the match. Freshman Hannah Lopiccolo played an outstanding game in the midfield, winning several 50-50 balls and effectively linking the defense with the attack.Â
The strikeforce of Blackwood and Cappuzzo looked dangerous all day, but it was not until 16 minutes into the second half that the duo combined for the game's only goal. On a long ball down the right wing, Cappuzzo outhustled a Drexel defender and placed a perfect cross through the box to Blackwood, who finished sublimely with a one-touch blast that gave Dragons' keeper Kelsie Fye (three saves) no chance.Â
Playing with the lead, Northeastern never gave Drexel a sniff as it defended well and played excellent ball-possession to milk the clock for the victory.Â
The Huskies will now have off until Nov. 7 when they will host a CAA semifinal match at Parsons Field. Their opponent will be determined on Nov. 2 in the CAA quarterfinal round.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Huskies honored their seven seniors: Paige Burnett, Bianca Calderone, Maria Lanyi, Kelsey McCarthy, Amy Steele, Awnalisa Walker and Lahaina Zoller.
