Season StatsHEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The No. 17 Northeastern Huskies pushed their winning streak to nine games after defeating conference rival Hofstra, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
Â
Nine games is the longest winning streak since the 2005 season, when the Huskies also won nine in a row that year. Â
Â
It is only the fifth time in program history that NU has won nine or more consecutive games. En route to the victory, five Huskies set new career highs, including
Natalie Stewart and
Emma Lamison in assists and goals,
Kelly Dunn and
Kate Carlson in goals, and
Vanessa Pryor in assists. This is also the first time since the 2005 season the Huskies have opened the season 5-0 on the road.Â
Â
The Pride opened the game's scoring at the 5:15 mark. Jonel Boileau registered her ninth goal of the season when she was able to beat sophomore goalkeeper
Becky Garner with a powerful shot. The goal was unassisted.
Â
The Huskies, however, responded quickly. NU has had tremendous success generating offensive scoring chances off of penalty corners, and that trend continued on Friday.
Â
NU's first goal came off a corner, when
Kate Carlson ripped one past Hofstra's goalkeeper, Carys Swan, to even the score of the game at 1-1. The assists were credited to Stewart and Lamison.
Â
The goal was Carlson's third of the season, setting a new single-season career-high. Stewart's assist was her sixth of the season, while Lamison registered her fifth assist of the season, also a new single-season career-high.
Â
Northeastern took a 2-1 lead at the 30:07 mark of the match.
Emma Lamison scored her fifth of the season after a scramble in front of the goal allowed the forward to beat the goalkeeper for the lead.
Â
Simca Schoen evened the score of the game late in the first half. The back was able to beat the defense to score her second goal of the season.
Â
With less than one minute remaining in the first half, however,
Natalie Stewart scored to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead. The assist was credited to
Vanessa Pryor, her sixth of the season. Stewart's goal sets a new career-high for total goals in one season with five.
Â
To open the second half,
Kelly Dunn scored her sixth goal of the season at the 42:34 mark. The goal gave the Huskies a two-goal lead, their largest of the game. A long shot traveled a little wide, but Dunn was there to beat the keeper. The goal was unassisted.
Â
The captain has now tripled her pervious career-high for total goals in one season.
Â
The Pride scored late in the second half to bring the game within one goal. Claudia Marin-Samper, Hofstra's top scorer this season, scored off a corner. It was her ninth goal of the season.
Â
The Huskies defense, however, responded and preserved the one-goal lead in the games final 10 minutes.
Â
The first half was as back-and-forth a half as the Huskies have had all season. Both teams registered four shots on goal, while the Huskies earned five penalty corners to four earned by the Pride. Garner made two saves, while Swan turned one shot away.Â
Â
The Huskies scored three goals in the first half for the second time this season. Over the first seven games of this winning streak, the second half has been the strong point for NU, but that has changed over its last two games.
Â
Northeastern returns home to take on crosstown rival No. 8 Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. The Huskies are currently 4-0 at home, having beaten Providence, New Hampshire, Dartmouth and UC Davis.
