NCAA Tournament BracketBOSTON -- The Northeastern women's soccer team made history on Saturday with its first-ever NCAA tournament win in a 2-0 victory over rival Boston University in first round play at Nickerson Field.
With the win, the Huskies advance to the second round against No. 2 Florida State in Tallahassee next Friday, Nov. 21. Northeastern previously made an appearance in the NCAA second round in 2008 after defeating Harvard on penalty kicks, 3-1, following a 2-2 draw.
The Huskies (15-4-3) took the lead on a 29th minute own-goal following a shot attempt by
Carly Wilhelm, and then doubled the advantage in the 78th minute when
Taylor Caparo finished a
Kayla Cappuzzo cross in the box.Â
Senior
Paige Burnett was phenomenal, making six saves as the Huskies earned their NCAA-leading 17th shutout of the season. For Burnett, it was her 30th career clean-sheet, which ranks fifth among all active NCAA keepers.Â
Boston University (14-5-3) held a 10-8 shot advantage, but could not find a way through a resolute Northeastern defense led by seniors
Bianca Calderone and
Awnalisa Walker. Outside backs
Skylar LeBlanc and
Mackenzie Dowd were equally effective in slowing the BU attack, which was held off the scoresheet for the second time this season against the Huskies.
Northeastern scored on two of its three shots on goal. Just before the half-hour mark, Cappuzzo was able to unlock the BU defense with a cutting through ball to Wilhelm down the center of the field. Wilhelm took a touch to her right to elude a defender, before sliding a shot past BU keeper Alyssa Parisi. The ball appeared to be headed inside the right post, but a BU defender got the final touch on the ball, resulting in an own goal at the 28:31 mark.
The lead held into the second half, despite BU's best efforts to knot the scoreline. Burnett made several critical saves early in the second stanza, including a pair on McKenzie Hollenbaugh, to keep the visitors in front.
With the game still in the balance, Northeastern was able to add a crucial insurance goal with just over 12 minutes to play in the game. Off a throw-in on the right sideline, Cappuzzo raced to catch up to the ball and cut around a defender on the wing. The freshman picked her head up and spotted Caparo racing to the net, before delivering a perfect ball across the box for a one-touch finish inside the left post at 77:18.Â
Burnett then capped the game with a pair of stops on Taylor Krebs and Rachel Blauner to preserve the shutout and hand the Terriers their first-ever home loss in the NCAA Tournament (2-1-0).Â
The Huskies will look to continue their record-breaking, dream season against the Seminoles on Nov. 21 (time TBA). Florida State defeated South Alabama, 5-0, in the opening round and is coming off its second straight ACC championship. The Seminoles were last season's NCAA runner-up after falling to UCLA, 1-0, in extra time of the 2013 NCAA title game.Â
