TopDrawerSoccer.com National PollBOSTON -- The Northeastern women's soccer team was ranked No. 25 in the country in the latest TopDrawerSoccer.com national poll, released by the website on Monday.Â
The national ranking represents the latest honor in what has become a banner season for the program. Northeastern (15-4-3) won both the CAA regular season title and the tournament crown, and became the first team since William & Mary in 2000-01 to claim back-to-back CAA championships.Â
The Huskies' success has carried over to the national stage as well. On Saturday, NU earned its first NCAA tournament win with a 2-0 victory over rival Boston University on the road. A first half own-goal following a
Carly Wilhelm shot gave the Huskies the lead, before
Taylor Caparo sealed the game with a 78th-minute strike off a feed from
Kayla Cappuzzo.
Northeastern has yet to allow a goal in the postseason, having shut out William & Mary (4-0), Hofstra (2-0) and BU (2-0). The Huskies have posted four straight shutouts overall and own 17 clean-sheets this season, which ranks second in the NCAA behind Wisconsin (18).Â
The No. 25 Huskies will travel to face Florida State, ranked No. 2 in the latest poll, on Friday at 5 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles own a 19-1-1 record and are coming off their second straight ACC championship.Â
This will be the second time Northeastern has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2008, the Huskies faced Boston College in the second round after eliminating Harvard on penalty kicks in their opening game.
