Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll |
NSCAA National PollBOSTON -- After claiming the CAA regular season title on Oct. 26, the Northeastern women's soccer team has garnered national attention from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Northeastern ascended to No. 1 in last week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional poll, and also received five votes in the association's National poll.
Northeastern finished the regular season with a 12-4-3 overall record, and won the CAA regular season championship with a 7-1-1 record and 22 points, one more than second-place James Madison (21).
The Huskies have slowly been on the rise in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic poll this season, having been ranked each of the previous seven weeks. NU made the jump from No. 9 to No. 3 on Sept. 16, and held the No. 2 spot for four straight weeks behind Colgate before dethroning the Raiders for the top position this past week.
Strong defense has been the key to Northeastern's success in 2014. This season, the Huskies have posted an NCAA-best 14 shutouts, and the team's goals-against average of .300 is good for second best in Division I, behind nationally ranked No. 1 UCLA (.243).
Northeastern has now become the highest-ranked CAA team in the Mid-Atlantic poll for five consecutive weeks. Fellow conference members Hofstra (No. 6), James Madison (No. 8), and William & Mary (No. 9) also were named to the region's top-10 list.
With the No. 1 seed in the CAA tournament locked up, the Huskies will host No. 4 William & Mary on Friday at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.
