Press ConferenceLOWELL, Mass. – Trailing 2-0 through 20 minutes of play, the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (0-6-1, 0-2-1) battled back to erase the deficit and earn a point on the road at No. 6/7 UMass Lowell on Friday night at Tsongas Center, 3-3.
Zach Aston-Reese and
Dylan Sikura had a goal and an assist each for the Huskies, while
Derick Roy tied a career-high with 38 saves as UMass Lowell outshot NU 41-28. A.J. White had a pair of goals for the River Hawks, who received 25 stops from Kevin Boyle.
Each team took advantage of its power play opportunities throughout the night, with NU going 2-of-5 and UML 2-of-4. The Huskies also won 38-of-69 draws.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as UML outshot the Huskies 13-5 and received two goals from White. Northeastern had a few chances to pot the game's first goal, including a bid from
Torin Snydeman when he blocked a shot in the defensive zone before transitioning up ice for a shot that was steered aside by Boyle. NU had another opportunity minutes later when
Dylan Sikura spotted
Garret Cockerill creeping in from the point for a one-timer that Boyle got a piece of.
UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead during a five-on-three power play opportunity with seven minutes to play in the first when White knocked home a loose puck near the right side of the cage following a scrum in front of the Northeastern net.
White struck again four minutes later when he kept the puck in at the blue line before taking a few strides towards goal and roofing a shot over Roy's shoulder for his second of the night and fourth of the season.
Northeastern battled back in the second period with two power play tallies to level the game at two through 40 minutes of play. The first came 6:28 into the period when Sikura spotted a loose puck to the left of the cage following a
Matt Benning shot from the point, and cleaned up the mess in front for his first collegiate goal.
With Chris Manccia in the box for crosschecking and less than five minutes to play in the frame, Aston-Reese knotted the game at two when he shoveled a puck past a slew of bodies in front of the net and past Boyle for the score. The play was briefly reviewed and stood as called.
Northeastern carried momentum into the third period, and took its first lead of the game when Rosenthal took a feed from Aston-Reese and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Boyle for his second goal in as many games.
UMass Lowell fired right back, however, with its second five-on-three power play goal of the evening when Adam Chapie sent home a rebound at the left side off a shot from the point for his second goal of the season.
The teams traded chances throughout the remainder of regulation before heading to overtime where Roy made five stops, including a big pad save on Evan Campbell in the final minute of the extra session.
The Huskies and River Hawks will meet again tomorrow night at Matthews Arena in the series finale. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
